The forecast indicates cloudy and colder today and tonight with showers in the east and west. Rain is expected Sunday with a high around 68 and a low near 64. Temperatures through Friday include a 5 pm high of 68 and a morning low near 54.
Grafton's newly constituted enforcement agency on condemned buildings was ready for business today following a formal organization meeting. Fire Chief John Proctor was picked as the agency's secretary and a plan to inspect, condemn, and demolish hazardous structures was outlined with hearings and possible appeals to circuit court. Citizens urged to report hazards for investigations.
The post master general said air mail addressed to Honolulu and the United States last month could not be delivered due to damage that obliterated the addresses. The damage was caused by an elephant on the plane with the mail.
Samuel P Johnson of Saratoga New York was hired as permanent administrator of Grafton City Hospital at a salary of 7200 annually. The appointment was announced by Virgil Rohrbough secretary of the hospital board after a special meeting. Johnson is to assume duties by January 1 or earlier and has long hospital administration experience including recent work in Saratoga.
The 1956 deer season ends with few casualties reported locally. Clyde Wilson of Grafton bagged a 130 pound doe in Upshur County while Robert Lawrence Phillips, hunting in Taylor, took a 140 pound eight point buck. Intermittent rain kept hunter turnout light as the season closed at sundown.
County Clerk Roxlest Claf Fowler reports November receipts totaling $833.98. Of this, $537.98 was sent to the sheriff, $296 in conservation fees to the state, with recording fees $427.75 and various fees totaling small amounts for capits, probating wills, executors, administrators, marriage licenses and license fees.
Grafton plans a testimonial dinner for School Superintendent R Virgil Rohrbough who will leave Graf ton next month for Charleston state post. The event January follows a 6 15 pm start in Grafton High School cafeteria under Taylor County Teachers Association sponsorship. No formal program, but Ronald Knotts will discuss Rohrboughs county service. Daugherty will present an appreciation gift as square dancing entertains attendees.
A Taylor County Circuit Court suit seeks an injunction to stop the S M Wrecking Co. from operating a junk yard on U.S. Route 50 between Grafton and Pruritytown, alleging nuisance, noise, fumes, and illegal licensing. Plaintiffs seek damages and an order halting activity in a residential area. The nine acre site was bought for 3 000 dollars by Helen June Lemon Speno. The case proceeds at the January term. John K. Burdette represents the plaintiffs.
Joan Bensky, 16, of Rosemont and a Flemington High School student, finished third in the West Virginia Fair queen contest held in Charleston on Friday. Ellen O'Dell of Clay County won the title, with Peggy Copley of Matewan second. Joan attended with chaperones Mr and Mrs Sam Humphries and was one of five statewide finalists.
Genie Catcher of Taylor County Public Health Nurse said a county wide polio clinic will be held Tuesday from 1 to 5 pm at the health office Junior High School building. Those up to 20 years old and pregnant mothers may receive shots. Mrs. Cather and Marilyn Melphis administered 94 shots at Grafton High School, mostly second inoculations.
Henry Fillmore, renowned marching band director and composer, died in Miami Friday night at age 75 from pneumonia.
Joseph F Montgomery of Mason Town won Region 2 1956 Farming for Better Living honors spanning Taylor Monongalia Marion Preston and Garrett counties. The ceremony in Morgantown featured a $50 bond for the Montgomerys with Mrs Bertha Montgomery noted as a former champion in 1940.
Weeping skies drenched the Grafton area at noon with steady rain and cooler weather forecast later. Overnight rainfall reached .18 inches at Tygart Dam, with continued showers through Sunday. The Montgomery family operates a 156 acre hillside Tayor farm, improving cattle and participating in 4-H and FFA activities. Bertha Montgomery, sweepstakes champion in 1940, boosted the farm’s income.
The Salvation Army Advisory Board led by Howard Lord will meet on Thursday December 13 to plan the Christmas drive. Captain Gilbert Watson announced visits to Philippi Elking old folk homes on December 17 and Parson's home on December 18, with gifts and stockings prepared by church women. A Christmas party and film will be held December 21 at 7 p.m. Applications for Christmas baskets open December 10 with two business letters required. accepted recipients receive a pickup card for December 24 between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Baskets include ham, canned goods, produce, fruit, candy, nuts, milk, bread, coffee, and jam.
Dag Hammarskjold told the United Nations General Assembly he had not received any official response to his request to visit Hungary for a two day inspection starting December 16. He said letters to Hungary and to Russia sought permission for U.N. observers to enter Hungary and report on the revolt. He noted border replies were still awaited and observers could not be dispatched until then. In Budapest, workers councils leaders were reportedly freed as Soviet troops moved through the capital amid heightened tension and arrests remained unconfirmed.
Washington. The United States will express deep concern to Egypt over reports that many Egyptian Jews face deportation. Assistant Secretary Robert C Hill told Rep Isidore Dollinger the Cairo embassy will convey the U S stance. Mrs Golda Meir urged action to halt deportations and seek humane treatment until departure.
Cincinnati officials of a hotel and restaurant workers union rehired Nick after a petition from the tavern owner and 21 patrons. The petition prompted the union to restore him to his post following his firing as a picket.
