President Taft pressed cabinet heads and district and river and harbor officials to cut spending deeply. New plan announced by Chas J Glidden to fly airships between Baltimore and Washington within six months with Philadelphia and New York as ports. Melvin Vaniman backs the service and supervises first ship building at Atlantic City to cross 485 miles to the capital. In a fierce blizzard at Aero Park two dozen miles from Pittsfield, Leo Stevens and three New Yorkers rose in the balloon Cleveland. They sailed southward at high speed and vanished from sight in three minutes while attempting to reach Long Island Sound.
