A fragmentary note from a local council meeting hints at plans to replace an aging fence line along Main Street. Residents voiced concerns about cost and disruption while officials promised a public hearing and a timeline for alternatives.
An awful accident on the Baltimore and Ohio West Virginia and Pittsburg division at Gillespie near Flatwoods left a conductor with a broken leg and a tramp killed. The train split on a hill and rough moving cars caused mass destruction, with heavy property damage expected as cars were reduced to kindling wood.
Following a Baltimore meeting of machinists from the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern railroads, representatives announced demands for a 10 percent wage increase and the abolition of the lowest machinist grade. The B&O offices said the wage issue had not yet been given the company’s attention.
Hugh Warder, a young attorney, closes on the eight room Mason property on Francis street. He plans thorough repairs and will rent it soon. The price paid is about 1200 dollars.

Announcement this morning said the local Modern Woodmen of America planned Labor Day outing and picnic has been postponed due to many other events on that date. Organizers expect to reschedule for mid next month with a special program to attract the largest crowd in county history.
Arrangements are set for the Grafton Sunday school association picnic and convention at Grafton park on Labor Day. The program features train rides, music, meals, reports from schools, addresses by district officers, a public discussion, a ball game, and calls for delegations from city and neighboring districts.
Allegheny company No 11 of Grafton invited members to assist in installing a new company formed there. A banquet at Trader's hotel will feature addresses by prominent state officials. About 25 local members plan to attend. Taylor County Sunday School convention will be at Simpeon Baptist church September 16 and 17 with W. O. Shafer and Martha V. Graham on the program and broad denominational representation anticipated.
Arrangements are nearly complete for a social in the Young Men's Christian Association rooms on Thursday night September 5. A fine program of music and recitations is planned with two numbers from each church. The Ladies Auxiliary will serve ice cream and cake in the mall dining room to benefit the association. A Ladies Auxiliary meeting is scheduled for Tuesday September 3 at 4 p.m. to finalize arrangements. An invitation is extended to all interested in the association movement to attend and enjoy a pleasant evening.
A solitary case in police court involved Morrie Hodges of Beverly found drunk. With no money, he was sentenced to a street position to work off his fine, highlighting a lonely docket and the local penal approach.
A city council committee will meet tomorrow morning to discuss the disposal of the city’s garbage. Proposals presented will be taken up and considered, with the session expected to be notably interesting as the method of refuse disposal is debated.
Professor Joseph Anderson, newly appointed principal of the First ward school, arrived with Mrs. Anderson and their family. The pair will visit Morgantown briefly before seeking a home nearby. Anderson, a veteran teacher, is seeking a position aligned with the Queens family residence.
Humane Agent Dr Leeda received notice that a six month old infant deserted by its mother Mrs Timmons in Belington will be sent to the Orphans Home in Wheeling. The child remains in care of Dr Leeda while awaiting delivery to the home.
Between 10 and 11 pm a horse and buggy owned by Dr. Emmett Buckalew was stolen while he was in Grafton on business. The horse was found at Blueville by noon, worn but in fair condition. Police will pursue the culprit.
Mrs Daisy Vandergrift, wife of a Thornton resident, who has been partly demented, will likely be committed to the Weston asylum after a Friday examination by physicians. She recently wandered onto a Baltimore and Ohio train track in Thornton and was seriously injured, and her family seeks proper care. The notice includes an unrelated ad: R L Clark & Co promoting apples.
Arrangements completed for two ball games at Elks ballpark on Labor Day Monday September 2 with Elks of this city facing Monomgah Glassworkers of Fairmont. The Glassworkers, one of the region's strongest amateur teams, will come prepared to win both games. The Elks have been practicing hard and aim to field their best batteries for a strong showing.
Mid week counts show voters split, many contestants hold back votes for final push. Final results due Monday at 5 PM EST. winners head to an expedition with many fair attractions listed including War Path attractions and scenic railroad. Standings feature telephone operators and railroad workers among the contenders with several names noted.
One of the season’s largest picnics is held at the park today with about seventy people attending. A special three-coach train plus baggage car ran this morning and will return this evening. Stenographers Supt. Lear earned praise for untiring effort in making the event a success. Participants include Clarence Po and Frank Cole, John McCafferty, Emil Canter, and Goethe Comedy.
A humane officer accuses Ira n Marquees of abusing a pony. The hearing with Squire Lilly, originally set for the afternoon, has been postponed to Friday afternoon.
At the bride's parents home in the First ward Miss Linnie Phillips wed W A MacLane. Rev H B Meyers officiated. Bridesmaid Mrs R H Bickle and beer man Harry Lambrecht attended. They plan to reside at the Waldo hotel before housekeeping. A second ceremony joined Ioie Mae Thorp and Clarence Post at the Thorp home with a small gathering and luncheon.
Mrs Mary Leslie, a member of Prof. Vincent's city orchestra, was asked to travel to Loch Lynn hotel near Mt. Lake Park to assist the hotel orchestra after the sudden death of the pianist. Miss Leeds departed last night to help for the remaining season, which ends around the fourth of the coming month. Prof. Vincent has led the hotel orchestra since it opened.
Announcement stated fires in the East End Window Glass factory would be started tomorrow morning and glass production would begin shortly after. Pots must be heated and glass prepared before full operation. Management expects abundant orders and a prosperous run.
Hon. C. W. Dillon former Texas commissioner confirmed he will seek delegate nomination for the next Republican National Convention. Friends urge him to place his name before the voters and earn party support.
