The Weather Bureau issued a precautionary note to Georgia and Carolina coastal areas to stay alert for a small but dangerous hurricane moving northwest in the Atlantic. The storm centered about 630 miles east of Melbourne, Florida, was slowing and forecasters expect a possible direction change.
Throngs of friends of former Grafton mayor Thomas Howard Cather gather at the late home on Walnut street to pay last tribute. Funeral will be from Bartlett Funeral home with Rev W T Gillore officiating and Mystic Lodge in charge of graveside services. He died after a one day illness at City hospital aged 77. He served as mayor 1923 to 1929 and leaves a widow and four children.
VFW Memorial City Post No 3081 will host the third district meeting tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the local hall with Commander Hugh G Muffley presiding and Harold Cross introduced. Visiting posts include Tunelton Century Newburg Terra Ita Philippi Belington Kingwood Masontown Rowlesburg. refreshments to follow. Also noted is a War Assets Admin sale for WWII veterans at the AA customer service center tomorrow and Tuesday.
A heat wave blankets the eastern half of the United States with temperatures above 100 and high humidity. Forecasters warn no relief is expected through the weekend and into Monday, as dozens of cities report record or near record highs and heat related deaths and prostrations rise.
The Associated Press reports West Virginia endures a sixth day of extreme heat as Huntington tops the readings while others reach into the 90s and 100s. Forecasters warn relief may not arrive soon with scattered storms possible later in the week. Readings show Huntington at 87 am EST and Wheeling, Morgantown, and Clarksville near 103, while Charleston Parkersburg touch the upper 90s and rural stations report highs around 98 to 102 in places like Parkersburg Martinsburg and Petersburg. The heat continues to grip the region with no end in sight.

London reports a war office notice that four senior German commanders, held for three years, will be tried on war crimes charges. Soviet consul general Jacob M Lomakin boarded the liner Stockholm for Russia after being stripped of credentials. The last of five runaway youths from the West Virginia Industria School for Boys at Pruntytown was captured in Parkesburg with two 18 year olds trying to break into a tavern. The fugitives were linked to six burglaries and two stolen trucks across Parkersburg Clarksburg and Bridgeport.
The City of Grafton seeks bids for repairs to nine streets including Boyd, Wilford, Durbin, Maple, Baker, Spruce, Front, Cemetery, and Ann streets plus cleaning of water pipes in high level areas with low pressure. Bids due September 11 at noon. work aims for pre-winter completion.
Charles Evans Hughes former chief justice and statesman dies at 86 in Osterville Massachusetts after a heart ailment. He had recently convalesced at the Wanita club and served as secretary of state and twice NY governor. His son reports congestive heart failure and uremic poisoning as the cause, with a sudden relapse the day of death.
KEYSER August 28 The West Virginian State Firemen's Association closes its annual convention with a full dress parade and votes Ralph Bean of Moorefield as president for the coming year. Bean heads the Potomac Valley Firemen's Association. Other officers named.
A. T. Bert Miller of East Washington street was appointed peacetime draft board chairman for the Taylor Barbour counties board. Registration will be delayed due to organization. Mrs. Harold J. Weekley will be the war time board clerk, Kerr hired as full time clerk. Headquarters on third floor of Grafton Bank and Trust building. Registration start date to be announced as soon as quarters are ready.
Plans indicate Monongahela Power will begin city street light conversion on Monday and will feed lights within a couple of days. Equipment has been moved to the city power station and workers will install a bank of transformers on a three pole structure before feeding the lights.
The Grafton Sentinel invites Donald Carrico of 113 Knotts Avenue to attend tonight's presentation of Red Ryder starring Allan Lane at the Dixie theatre.
The navy's 82 and a half ton Caroline Mars landed in Lake Michigan near Burnham Park at 11:25 a.m. CST after a record non stop flight from Honolulu to Chicago. Officials cited an unofficial 4,676 mile leg and a 24 hour 12 minute time, with plans to circle Grosse Isle before returning to Chicago. Pilot Lt Commander Robert J Hunt guided the craft amid detours from initial plan.
Mercury surged to 98 degrees yesterday breaking long standing local heat records in Grafton with noon reads of 93 degrees today. Yesterday's forecast of showers seemed unlikely as the day reached 92 at 1 PM and 96 at 2 PM. The forecast calls for relief tomorrow with partly cloudy skies and scattered storms, followed by warm, fair conditions tonight. Observers note blue collar district readings may climb higher than official station in Blueville.
