A lantern reflection in a garage window at Earl W. Carroll’s residence on West Main Street led to a 4:10 a.m. fire department call. The Grafton Fire Department responded with a general alarm but no fire was found.
President Roosevelt told reporters he did not believe the European situation guaranteed war, noting he would not ask Congress to act on neutrality steps unless war seemed imminent. He had not yet received replies to his messages to Germany and Poland. Berlin reports Soviet pressure on Poland as Germany seeks a peaceful settlement and possible non aggression ties with Russia and Japan.
Paris reports France asks Poland to avoid actions that could provoke maltreatment of Germans in Poland and to prevent border incidents. Officials stress precaution without weakening French backing of Poland in case of war. Return orders for French British missions at Moscow undecided. Conferences continue with delays unexplained.

Rome reports two more classes of Italian reservists mobilized raising total under arms to six classes. Those born 1903 and 1913 join about 1.3 million existing soldiers. In Point Pleasant Mason county holds its annual potato festival as Marion Wedge aims to fly 50 hours in the potato bug endurance record. The potato queen June Ritchie of Ravenswood received the key to the city from Mayor Krodel, with the king to be chosen in today’s judging as contests run through Saturday.
A fire starting from a gas hotplate in the W. P. Bartlett Funeral home and furniture store in Gassaway yesterday destroyed one building and damaged three others. No injuries among occupants of three nearby apartments were reported. Damage estimated at 8000 to 10000 dollars. insurance partly covered. The blaze damaged the Dixie Five and Ten, Walker drugstore, Atlantic and Pacific grocery, and the two-story structure above.
Louis Lepke Buchalter, the fugitive racketeer with a 50000 dollar price on his head, surrendered to J Edgar Hoover and was questioned in secrecy. Hoover said he and Lepke were alone when the surrender occurred, and that Lepke had never left the borough of Manhattan.

Grafton hosts three local leaders G. T. Bartlett Harry Murray and John Hopkins after a 500 mile goodwill tour sponsored by the Upper Monongahela Valley Association. The trip began Tuesday and ended yesterday with 33 members from several counties participating.
WPA workers will gain seven cents an hour starting September 1. Monthly pay rises from 39 to 48.10 dollars for those working up to 130 hours. West Virginia is now in the wage region classification alongside northern states per recent congressional order.
London August 25. A mutual aid agreement between Great Britain and Poland was signed at the foreign office by Lord Halifax and Ambassador Count Edward Raczyński. The eight article pact outlines when each side would assist the other, and officials call the negotiations speedy and satisfactory. Continued on page five.
Rev. George E. Manson rector of St. Matthias Episcopal Church has returned to his parochial duties. After a vacation spent at Cape Cod Massachusetts and in Maine services at St. Matthias will be resumed this Sunday as usual.
Poland refuses mediation and rejects capitulation under pressure from Germany and Soviet efforts. President Moscicki is expected to reply to Roosevelt's appeal as Warsaw emphasizes not negotiating under armed intimidation and maintaining resolve against concession.
Berlin papers briefed that seven Germans and one Czech national were shot by Polish insurgents at Bielitz near the Polish border. The dispatch says Poles rounded up 25 Germans and several Czechs on subversion charges, loaded them into trucks, and many tried to flee into a forest when a vehicle swerved.
Reports from Bucharest say a non-aggression pact between Hungary and Rumania is nearly ready for signature with discussions far advanced and the treaty drawn up. Budapest officials deny current talks but acknowledge possible future negotiations, while Germany expresses pleasure and observers see a step toward neutrality in southern Europe amid tensions.

London reports Britain taking urgent steps to conserve gold reserves amid rising war threat. The stabilization fund paused pound support against the dollar, provoking heavy losses in gold as the pound’s exchange rate fluctuated from 4.66 to 4.37 and back to 4.42 by noon.
London hailed Britain as a ray of hope in a darkening European crisis. President Roosevelt's peace appeals raised cautious expectations for a conference over conflict, even as Britain prepared for a possible warlike tempo. The second appeal to Hitler and Polish leader Moscicki arrived, stirring general welcome but limited comment in morning papers.
In Santiago a regiment of infantry revolted against President Pedro Aguirre Cerda. Reports said four to five artillery regiments in the capital joined. A few shots were fired. Radio Nacional Agricultura named ex-president General Carlos Ibanez and General Ariosta Herrera as leaders of the uprising.
Aug 25 reports from Danzig say two Polish soldiers were killed near the border as precursors to widening military preparations. The city sees a near warlike scale with gasoline rationing and heavy troop concentrations near Poland, while private autos struggle to obtain fuel.
