President Roosevelt renewed efforts to avert war by appealing to King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy to propose pacific solutions. The message urged the Italian government to help prevent a general conflict, stressing American sympathy if Italy acts decisively.
The National Youth Administration announces expanded work programs for Taylor county youths in the 1939 1940 fiscal year. A tabulation shows 182 youths employed on NYA projects through June 30 with total monthly earnings around 1848 dollars and NYA spending about 22176 dollars for that period.
The Grafton Sentinel invites Mrs. G. H. Ringler of 40 Thayer Street to attend tonight’s Dixie theatre presentation featuring The Man Who Dared with Jo Bryan and Some Like It Hot with Bob Hope and Shirley Ross. Also advertised are They All Come Out with Rita Johnson and Tom Neal at the Strand theatre, plus an extra attraction at the Dixie.
Marion Wedge a 23 year old pilot aiming to set a solo endurance mark of 50 hours during Mason county potato festival activities. He will take off at 4 p.m. from Point Pleasant near Gallipolis Ohio in the Potato Bug Aeronca with 52 gallons of fuel and a 42 gallon auxiliary tank. If weather permits he plans to circle and land at the national guard camp Conley after the flight.
Baltimore August 24 1917 two hundred B and O railroad shop employes now furloughed will be called back to active duty. they will work in the Cumberland and Keyser West Virginia shops constructing 180 of the largest freight cars in the system designed for carrying automobiles. Available steel underframes will be used and steel body parts fabricated at Cumberland for assembly at Keyser. The cars will be of the cover wagon type introduced by B and O several years ago 44 feet 6 inches long and 9 feet 2 inches wide.
Mayor P F Gillespie announced rapid progress on the Grafton City hospital project on Finnegans Rock. Twenty six carpenters are assigned to the WPA effort to build forms for the four story building as crews speed up work and city officials express satisfaction with the pace.
The deed record shows Frank Cather acquiring Beech Pearl Street property from an unnamed loan association. Parrish Reality Company handled the transaction with no disclosed consideration. The recorder’s office of B. C. St. Clair County Clerk documented the transfer.
Taylor County Farm Bureau voted unanimously to back the first annual county fair set for September 15 and 16 at the Roll-A-Drome. A dedicated fair committee led by R P Bell and including cattle expert T B McVicker and sheep head Brady Currey will coordinate exhibits and events. The group will collaborate with Kiwanis appointees C C Batson and others to stage agricultural displays and community activities.
In London ambassador Kennedy urged all American tourists in the British Isles to sail home at once, citing possible difficulty in securing future sailings and potential dangers. Officials estimate 3,000 to 4,000 Americans in England Scotland and Wales. Berlin meanwhile reported the U S embassy also advising Americans to leave Germany.
Danzig’s senate voted to appoint Albert Poster Nazi gauleiter of the free city, elevating him to chief of state and ending Arthur Greiser’s tenure as head of the government. Border between Poland and Danzig closed, with officials citing reprisals and preparations for a possible reunion with Germany.
FAIRMONT Aug 24. Charleston selected for the 70th annual convention of the Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters in West Virginia. Officers to be elected in final session. Parade by Knights of Khorassan to close the convention with a ceremonial. Fred L. Sylvester of Maine spoke at a diamond jubilee meeting.

Troop alerts rise across Europe as diplomatic efforts continue in a bid for peace.
The Bank of England lifted its rediscount rate from 2 to 4 percent today marking the first change since June 30 1932. The move came as the London Stock Exchange committee met with chairman Robert Pearson to set minimum gilt edge prices while trading stalled and German bonds fell.
ERIE Pa Aug 24 Henry B Squires of Fairmont West Virginia is the new president of the National Fraternal Order of Police succeeding Ben K Perry of Gary Indiana with A J Courtine of Lorain Ohio named grand guard and the secretary position filled.
President Roosevelt told reporters he would confer with Secretary Hull on the European crisis and review two year old evacuation plans for Americans abroad after returning to Washington. He spoke aboard the destroyer Lang at Sandy Hook before headed ashore and then to Red Bank to board a train.
Ira Junior Grimm thirty of Graf ton route two was indicted by a U S grand jury in Clarksburg for stealing a United States mail truck from in front of the Baltimore and Ohio station on July 9 He signed a confession after his apprehension by Sheriff Herbert Evans and local officers who closed the case within hours of the report
Charles W. Galloway vice president in charge of operations and maintenance hosted an open house on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad fifth floor offices to mark his fifty six years of service. He began as a messenger boy in 1883 progressing through roles at Camden Station and the master of transportation office before later posts as clerk and stenographer.
The British and French military missions will leave Moscow tomorrow ending talks with Soviet Russia on a three power mutual assistance pact. Von Ribbentrop reported to Hitler after a non aggression pact with Soviet Russia. Swastika banners adorned Moscow airport as he arrived.
