West Virginia youth tour ends amid polio deaths and politics

Fifty seven crippled children from 18 counties toured historic Williamsburg after a Virginia Beach trip funded by the West Virginia Rotarians. Three polio victims near Charleston were reported hospitalized, including 12-year-old Charles William Lambert, brother of a previous polio death. State political activity included campaign expenditure reports and a courtly party switch, with Bailey criticizing Holt’s GOP move. A new judge selection proposal for 1951 was endorsed by the State Bar Association.

Gambling raid nets seven and liquor at Sportsman Club

City police stormed the Sportsman Club on Latrobe Street at 11 16 last night arresting bartender Lawrence Boyes and seven patrons. They seized gambling devices and several bottles of liquor including unopened fifths and a pint of whiskey. The raid, led by Acting Chief Messenger and officers Mauller Stemple Stenple Robinson Funkhouser and Hickman, followed a tip from an out of town man who reported buying a drink and whiskey and led to a warrant. The arrestees appeared before Municipal Judge Guy Allender with trial set for August 21 at 1 30 p.m. Continuous years of loitering and gambling charges noted for several others.

Crash near Webster claims life of James Hill at 23

James Lewis Hill, 23, of Belington, died after a Jan last night crash on U S Route 119 south of Webster near Truman McVicker farm. Three other young men were hospitalized with head injuries and fractures after their car crashed into a bridge. one passenger, Bennett of Belington, survived. Hospital reports list Hill’s death at 4:15 a.m. The accident, investigated by local authorities, occurred at about 10:55 p.m. last night.

The West Main Street Methodist church marks its 100th year with a week of services. A Tuesday banquet opens the celebration, featuring speaker Reverend Doctor William E. Craig of Fairmont. Special nightly services and completion of the social hall extension are planned.

Three Year Old Rescued From Ten Foot Well Shaft

Rescuers pulled a three year old boy from a ten foot well shaft in Fairmont Minnesota after a two hour effort. The child fell into the opening when he pushed a side box covering the top. A dozen men participated in the frantic rescue.

Strike mediators pushing for quick rail labor peace talks

End Of Two Month World Telegram Strike Reached

Negotiators announced an agreement to end the two month strike by the C I 0 Newspaper Guild against the New York World Telegram and Sun. The strike began June 13 in a wage and job security dispute. Terms were hammered out after a long session and will be put to guild executives and members for votes. Publication is expected to resume in two to three days if accepted.
