Marty E Stone secretary of student loans and placement announced Morgantown that part time jobs will be available to many students attending West Virginia University this fall The office has been listing many jobs daily and noted openings for young men and women qualified by experience in office work and other fields.
The U S agriculture department forecasts a 1948 cotton yield of 15 169 000 bales, the seventh largest on record, with 313 5 pounds per acre. The report notes favorable growing conditions, higher fertilizer use, and more heavy-yield acreage, and provides ginning and condition figures as of Aug 1.
Two 14 year olds are awaiting juvenile court action for burglarizing the confectionery stand at the Grafton dam observation platform operated by Joseph Evans. A youth confessed after being caught with a Baby Brownie camera from the loot. Bob White, a former city patrolman, aided in the arrest and investigation.
U S, Britain and France envoy teams held third Kremlin talks with Molotov and Stalin era officials, aiming to resolve Berlin blockade and German questions. Ambassadors Walter Bedell Smith Frank Roberts and Yves Chicheynea t met Moscow officials in a high stake, potential turning point session.

Pittsburgh text reports a National Labor Relations Board hearing scheduled in Kingwood West Virginia tomorrow on an unfair labor practice charge filed against United Mine Workers District 31 after roving picketing disorders last spring. Coal operators claim the picketing action affected a soft coal pension and related issues.
The United Republican Club of Taylor County announced the cancellation of its August 13 meeting because many members serve as delegates to the state Republican convention in Charlestown on August 14. The next meeting is Friday, August 20, with urged attendance for several important business items.
Scattered thundershowers are forecast late today with little change in temperature. Tomorrow should remain mild following a comfortably warm weekend that saw the mercury rise to 79 degrees yesterday. By noon today the mercury had risen to 76. The low for last night was 52 degrees. The 8 a.m. reading was 62.
Mrs Elizabeth Behrens Blumenberg wife of Prof Edward Blumenberg founder of the Wheeling symphony society died yesterday in Wheeling. Surviving son Hugo Blumenberg a Wheeling attorney and chairman of the Wheeling Red Cross board.
Charleston reports two more highway fatalities as Russell Brooks Adams, 6, on State Route 20 in Upshur County and Sandra Mentea on State Route 3 near Raleigh were struck by autos. The month’s toll rises to six with a Charleston man killed in an early Sunday crash, bringing the year total to 229.
President Truman nominated former Governor Maurice J Tobin of Massachusetts for labor secretary amid uncertainty over his acceptance. Tobin, aiming to regain the governorship, declined to say if he would serve if confirmed, stating he remains a candidate and will decide in the coming days. Senate voices differ on timing for cabinet appointments.
Berlin Aug 9 The Telegraf newspaper claimed Russians are digging trenches and mounting weapons along the border of the Soviet occupation zone with western Germany. Russians are said to be building a security border with water towers fencing and road barricades while US forces move toward Germany. US officials could not confirm the report but note repeated accounts of strengthened border installations.
New York police asked New Jersey authorities to find Michael Ivanovich Samarin a 40 year old school teacher who told the FBI his story. Samarin and his wife and three children are at Farm Rova near Cassville operated by a White Russian anti-Communist group. The un American Affairs Committee has shown interest. Samarin’s whereabouts are cloaked after a voluntary FBI interview. Police say the consulate warned it would prosecute if the family is detained against their will.
Ninteen year old Jane Ellen Queen of Huntington was named Miss West Virginia 1946 at the third annual state pageant in Moundsville. The Huntington education major received a $2,000 scholarship after Mrs Barbara Jo Walker Hummel crowned her.
Reburial services for Pvt Charles E Reed 23-year-old Grafton native and WWII casualty will be held August 14 at the local National Cemetery. He died in Italy in April 1944 after serving about two years in the U S Army, leaving a mother and siblings. Also listed for reburial that day is Pfc Charles F Martin of Barbour County with Catholic rites at 11 45 a m. Additional reburials include Tech 4th Grade Years V Hixenbaugh Edward Canda Pfc William E Cooke scheduled Friday.
A grand jury in Pittsburgh enters its third week of probing rackets alleged to operate under police and political protection. Eighteen new witnesses were sworn, among them contractor Henry Tirl and his brother-in-law City Patrolman Ednnis Tim puna.
In Youngstown Pennsylvania a barrage of machine gun fire killed a 36 year old steelworker after two law enforcement officers died earlier outside a barricaded home. Captain Hadock said J Thomas Chaslin the 58 year old burgess and constable was fatally shot with a 303 rifle while attempting to arrest William A Smith on an assault charge filed by his wife. The incident followed the earlier deaths near the same scene in a violent weekend.
Washington August, Victor Perlo refused to say if he knows the woman who accused him of passing wartime secrets to a Red spy ring and whether he has been a Communist. He testified to long government service and current work as an economist for the Progressive party in New York City. Elizabeth Bentley testified Perlo directed a group of workers who shared war secrets with Russian agents and supplied figures on airplane production during his War Production Board service. Whittaker Chambers described Perlo as a prewar Communist underground leader in Washington. The committee reopened hearings and prepared to hear mystery witness Alexander Koral scheduled to appear this afternoon.
Dr. Lloyd C. Wicke of Pittsburgh will speak at the 1949 Mother's Day service at Andrews Methodist Church. Named bishop after Rev. Dr. Straughn’s retirement on his 72nd birthday, Wicke leads the Pittsburgh Area conference covering West Virginia. Local support grows for making Andrews church a national religious shrine to American motherhood.
Ernest McDonald, 19, of Martinsburg, received the association's star farmer award during the Future Farmers of America annual convention. McDonald operates a 923 acre fruit and dairy farm in partnership with his father.
Elizabeth T Bentley testified it is extremely likely there were many more than two groups leaking wartime secrets to a Soviet ring. She named Perlo and Silvermaster as group heads and described various contact men, while Perlo and Silvermaster denied spying. The House committee continued its inquiry amid denials and questions about other similar groups.
Police reported a quiet city weekend but outside Lambert Motor Co on Route 50 east of Blueville robbers took a new 1948 Chrysler Special Town and Country sedan owned by Lester Lambert. Four dollars in change was stolen from a cash register. No trace of the car had been found by late afternoon.
