Auto Workers Vote Walkout Amid GM Back-to-Work March
In Detroit on August 7 a walkout threat loomed as a back-to-work march pressed in General Motors plants. CIO UAW Local 190 authorized leaders to call a strike at Packard Motor Car if sanctioned by its international board, though certainty of action remained doubtful. Curt Murdock, local president, said the vote aimed to avert a second double cross in the election determining union representation between UAW CIO and AFL. The NLRB set tentatively August 17 for the election. Packard’s C B Weiss noted no grievances were reported and management would meet either union but not grant exclusive rights yet.
