Navy Secretary John L Sullivan quits in protest against halting the 65,000 ton Super Aircraft Carrier project. White House said the resignation followed a noon announcement after a meeting with the president. Defense policy and defense budget moves are cited as triggers.
Frankfurt, Germany. An anti Communist federal republic of West Germany is due to come into being this summer. The new state will have a population of over 46 million within its borders, second only to the Soviet Union in Europe. A six hour conference between West German leaders and Western military governors cleared final obstacles. Gen. Lucius D. Clay announced the news.
Tokyo reacts to Civil War style clashes as Communists shell British ships on the Yangtze and the Nanking residence of U S Ambassador J Leighton Stuart is raided. Observers say the incident tests diplomatic immunity and Western resolve while Japanese watch Western moves for strength or weakness from Shanghai.
France would receive the largest share of a proposed American military aid program for western Europe with priority for its strategic location and 10 divisions in need of equipment. The administration plans to ask Congress for 1.13 billion dollars to rearm Atlantic ports next year. Britain and Italy were noted as second and third in line for arms and materials, with other friendly nations receiving support as well. In Morgantown, Gerald Radcliffe, 22, said a rough talking man assaulted him along the highway, demanded money, and knocked him unconscious with a pistol butt. the assailant pocketed 50 cents.
Russia offers a deal to end the Berlin blockade to pick up the street flusher on May 3. Morrison and Mumaw will drive the flusher from Oregon to town, the Jaycees report. The project costs 5400 with about 1000 still needed in donations from local businesses and citizens.
London reports Russia offers a plan to end the Berlin blockade before a four power talks on Germany. The proposal would drop preconditions, with the west to set a date for a four power meeting and resume talks after Moscow lifts the blockade.
More than 400 people are expected to attend the Baltimore and Ohio Monongah division safety rally at Grafton Junior High School on West Washington Street at 8 p.m. Friday. A film Miricle of Paradise Valley will be shown. T. J. Klauenberg and G. W. Elste will preside. All railroad employees their families and friends are invited in a social program with attendees from Buckhannon Clarksburg and Fairmont.
A special grand jury in New Cumberland returned three indictments each with five counts in the kidnapping of two Weirton police officers on April 14. Orville Kittle of Greene County Pennsylvania is charged with abduction. two other men named John Doe are accused of joining. Indictments also allege kidnapping with intent to kill, auto transportation, evading arrest, and armed robbery. Kittle was arrested in Huntingdon Pennsylvania on auto theft charges and identified by victims. Chief Pilette and Lt. Rossel left for Denbigh Virginia to identify the suspects.
A 1,500 brown trout shipment is set to arrive Wednesday morning to stock below the Grafton dam on Maple Avenue side of the Tygart Valley river. Game Protector Joseph H. Powell announced the plan. Local sportsmen may help stock at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday by contacting Powell. the trout come from Petersburg hatchery by truck.
Coal loadings on the Monon division of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad totaled 12 185 cars for last week the highest since the war years. A local railroad official said the record followed the miners memorial holiday and was likely due to large coal stockpiling ahead of the June 30 contract expiration.
Calvin Morrison of Maple Avenue, a World War II veteran and laundry employee, filed his petition with 50 names at City Hall this morning for the June 7 city council election. The terms of H. Dent Wiles and William A. Murray expire June 30, with filing due by Saturday noon. Exercise mentions possible petitions for Merritt Feather and Dorsey Bolyard.

The remains of Fireman 2nd class Harold Paul Clovis, a Parkview resident killed on Truk Island December 28, 1945, arrive in Grafton. Services Sunday at 11 a.m. from Nazarene Church with Reverends Johnson and Boswell officiating. Final burial at Cottontown Cemetery, Burton, West Virginia. Clovis served in the Navy from July 1944, training at Great Lakes and Norfolk, then anti aircraft duties aboard LSTs.
American ships slipped down the Yangtze estuary to dodge involvement as Communist forces claimed victory near Nanking and Hangchow. British and American vessels pulled back, leaving Shanghai’s 5 million residents watching for a Communist arrival with little resistance anticipated.

After a period of hospital neglect Old Doc Stork delivered three babies in one day. A boy, eight pounds seven and a half ounces, arrived at 1 27 p m to Mr and Mrs Herbert McWilliams of Route 1 Simpson. A son, seven pounds twelve ounces, followed for Mr and Mrs Robert Jones of 314 Walnut Street at 4 23 p m. Homer Knotts Route 2 Tunnelton welcomed a daughter weighing five pounds seven ounces at 7 11 p m Monday.
