Fire Rips Jorgen Anderson Barn Near Grapsttinger

Friday morning a large 100 by 46 foot barn at Jorgen Anderson’s farm north of Grapsttinger burned, causing $7,500 loss with $3,900 insured. Neighbors aided, adjoining barn saved, horses cattle hay and pigs saved. rest of complex including silo and drive were destroyed. cause unknown. John L. Birkland died Saturday in the same period.

Death claims esteemed citizen of Graettinger

John L. Birkland died at his home in Graettinger on a Saturday after months of illness. A Norwegian immigrant born October 6, 1857, he moved from Illinois to Emmetsburg area then Graettinger to provide schooling and a quieter life. He leaves his wife and eight children, with two grandchildren and three sisters. services were led by Rev. S. Q. Sando, burial in Hvergeven cemetery.

L A Towe narrowly escaped serious injury last Saturday evening when a car driven by Peter Tornell struck him as he rode a wheel to a wagon attached to a team near Armstrong raid. He suffered a broken rib and bruises but is recovering at a hospital. the horses and wagon were largely undamaged. Both parties praised the relatively light outcome.

Truck of rattlers dumped in hollow near Fort Dodge

A truck carrying crates of rattlesnakes from a traveling medicine firm toppled between Fort Dodge and Webster City last week. The crates remained intact, all snakes saved, including an old nether rattlesnake and fourteen babies.
