Iowa Conservation Commission Sets 58 Day Pheasant Season

The Iowa Conservation Commission on August 31 kept a liberal 58 day pheasant hunting season with a three cock daily bag and a six bird possession limit. Upland Wildlife Biologist Ron George argued cocks only seasons do not curb populations as hunting mortality replaces natural mortality, and surplus cocks can be harvested without harming reproduction. Habitat limits, not hunting, mainly constrain northwest Iowa pheasants. funding for large land leases is being studied to improve habitat. Population has risen about 20 percent since last August, with much of northwest Iowa recovering from the 1975 blizzard and most areas rated fair to good.
