Avery Island’s Isle of Spice and its Garden Wonders
A travel feature explores Avery Island on Highway 90 near New Iberia, revealing a salt mountain hosting vast peppers for Tabasco, a 200 acre formal garden, and a subterranean salt castle. It highlights Edward Avery McIlhenny’s role, exotic plants, Bird City with 20 000 snowy egrets, and the Tabasco plant led by Walter S. McIlhenny. Visitors are advised to time visits to seasonal blooms and bird nesting. The piece closes with a reunion note of twin sisters after 43 years.
