Boxing Show Draws Big Crowd in Labor Day Event

The Graettinger Legion Athletic Association hosted a labor day boxing show with strong attendance and competitive ringside action. Everett Strong vs Fred Etzel ended in a draw. Gerald Reed defeated Harold Higgins on points. Dago King vs Gus Kielbrook was a draw. Jack Carney beat Joe Morris in four rounds. Fans from Emmetsburg Ruthven and nearby towns praised the event, the first athletic show by the local Legion. Lee Taylor of the Des Moines Register officiated.

Hog boasts among largest in region at local fair

O. R. Gardner displayed a massive hog near Charles Jensen hardware store on Labor Day. The boar Big Tim weighs 820 pounds and measures seven feet long. Big Labor Day Celebration in Grachtinger

A large Labor Day festival in Grachtinger featured ideal weather, heavy attendance, and a full program. Events included street sports, a midday dinner by M. E. Ladies' Aid, a band concert, a Saunders address, free street attractions, a Lone Rock to Bancroft baseball win, a Hawkeye theatre show, an old time dance, a merry-go-round, various concessions, and a Royal Lumber boxing card noted elsewhere.

Poultry Droppings Spread Disease, ISU Extension Warns

Droppings spread most serious poultry diseases, says the Iowa State College extension service poultry department. Clean dropping boards and well constructed floors that are easy to clean and disinfect are emphasized as key to limiting infection. Though cleanliness is valued, room for sanitation improvement remains.
