Emmetsburg First In Kitten Ball Tourney

Emmetsburg won the sixth annual kitten ball tournament at Graettinger High School field tuning out Wallingford 8 to 4 in the final. A large crowd watched fast, snappy play as Graettinger and other teams competed in a day of close contests with Ringsted Fenton and Ruthven figures noted for key performances.

Work Started On Bowery Contractor Selee Mission

Selee began his force of men yesterday morning on the bowery site between the Frick Drug Stove and the Duhn billion hall. The bowery floor with a canvas top is to be completed by Saturday as work progresses. The Graettinger public schools plan to open Labor Day for registration with classes starting Tuesday morning after three and a half months of vacation.

Bormann Car Damaged In Mishap Sunday

Gregory and Norbert Bormann were in an auto collision near Estherville Sunday night. Their machine lost control crossing the railroad tracks and upset in the field. The two young men and the two Grachtinger Indies escaped with slight injuries, the top of the car damaged considerably.

Cotton Blossom Singers To Perform Labor Day Service

The Cotton Blossom Singers from Piney Woods School in Piney Woods Mississippi will sing at the Methodist church Monday evening at eight o'clock. The renowned group has toured nationwide with successful concerts, including appearances in northern Iowa last year. Local businessmen prepare for the 34th annual Labor Day picnic in Graettinger. Meals and drinks are being stocked and soft drinks arranged for thousands expected to attend. The bowery is to be erected today and the free act platform will be built Saturday.

Evalyn Monk Weds Iowa City Law Student

Evalyn Monk of Iowa City and Llewellyn K. Norris of Burlington were married at Rock Island on a Monday in August. The bride, a pharmacy graduate of Iowa City, works at Frick Drug Store and belongs to Kappa Kappa Psi. Kleigl Family Mourn Death Of Baby Girl

Mr and Mrs John A Kleigl of the Ospool neighborhood mourn the death of their two year old daughter Ellen who passed away Friday night. The child was taken ill Thursday with intestinal flu and despite medical care she died. Funeral held Monday at St Johns Cemetery in Hmmetsburg with family and friends offering sympathy.

O C McCallater recalls 1895 work on a Bedman area farm for John Doty. He sold 25 bushels of corn for 2.50 per ton, bought Iowa coal at 4.60 per ton, oats around a die per bushel, wages 18 per month, laborers paid me per bushel for corn, winter shows high corn use and cheaper feral. Emmetsburg taxpayers gathered in the courthouse to demand cuts in salaries and public costs. Gov Turner backed reduction efforts. speakers urged limits on local and state pay, road spending, and the County Agent office. Heavy Rain Believed To Benefit Pastures

Heavy rain afternoon Monday near Graettinger produced two and two tenths inches of water in a short period. A black northwest cloud and a second cloud from the southwest merged as winds rose, but a twister did not touch down. The downpour caused local businesses to light early.

Mrs Fleming Improves After Serious Operation

Mrs J A Plena who underwent a major operation at Rochester hospital a week ago is reported to be recovering well. The condition was serious for several days but today she is much better and improving, a message received from Mr Fleming indicates. The news brings cheer to her friends in Graettine and nearby areas.

New Pastor Coming Sunday

The Danish Guth eran church announces Rev. James P. Christensen of Hrush Colorado as the new pastor. He will lead services Sunday at 9:15 a.m. at the south Walnut church and 11 a.m. at the Graettinger church after arriving by Saturday evening. His furniture was moved here last week.
