Cowboys and Horses in Western Ride Reform
Ranchers and cowboys in the east and Colorado refine horsemanship through controlled 60 mile rides lasting 9 hours. Initial Colorado trials in 1922 revealed misjudged distances, as mounts proved longer than expected. Riders learn horse traits from careful daily examinations, favoring well red Thoroughbred stock supplied by the Army Remount Services, with some Arabs and Standardbreds, to suit range work or cavalry use.
