Lake Center Child Crushed By Heavy Truck

A 38 year old boy, son of Mr and Mrs Abe Zerstrow, was crushed to death Thursday when a gravel truck rolled over his chest. The truck was driven by the boy’s uncle, a brother of Mrs Zerstrow. Relatives and friends express sincere sympathy. source details were provided by Mrs Seth Smith of Lost Island.

The Men On The Dead Man's Chest opening chapter

Dunn Clayton was shot September 29 1928 at midnight in the Dutch Mill on Chicago’s near North Side. Three gangsters attempted a heist. a fourth man fired the fatal shot as others fled, with police nearby. The dramatic opening of The Men on the Dead Man’s Chest appears in this week’s Graettinger Times. Also notes a heart and chest clinic on Friday and corn husking wages.

Many Prizes To Jack Creek On Achievement Day

Achievement day for the third year in Emmet county was held in Esther ville court room on Saturday October 17. Miss Elizabeth Morrell lectured on five lessons for baskets trays lamp shades and other household items. Prizes listed include multiple firsts for Jack Creek residents such as Mrs Joe Hassel and Mrs R Glassnapp in baskets utility basket lamp shade domestic pillow and other categories. Mrs N May Larson presided as judge and Mrs J Bosold won demonstration. Publicity chairman.

Mrs. Matsen Dies After Illness in Nebraska

Mrs. Peter Matsen of Nelson Nebraska died after a serious illness. Her Graettinger sisters Mrs. Jed Simonsen and Mrs. Ole Sorensen left for Nelson to be with her. She was a sister of Mrs. Hans Duus of Graettinger and Chris Jensen of Ruthven. Mr Matsen died a year ago. they lived in Graettinger years ago and came from Minnesota. Funeral details and life history not available this week. The Times expresses sympathy to the sisters.

Dr Powers in Serious Condition At Emmetsburg

The Democrat reports Dr Powers of Emmetsburg is in a serious condition for several days with an ailment resembling sleeping sickness. Dr Beatty of Mallard and a Fort Dodge specialist are treating him.

They planned to join the corporation to implement Hoover era recommendations. A county unit will be organized and funds available for legitimate needs including agriculture, aiming to lift prices. Sim Robinson Dies in Des Moines Hospital

The West Bend Journal reports Sim Robinson’s death at Des Moines Hospital on Wednesday of last week. A Grundy Center resident for years, he suffered from diabetes and was brought to Des Moines for treatment. He lived in West Bend for many years and was a familiar, jovial figure to residents of Graettinger and northwest Iowa.

Bank robbers visited Little Rock and fired at assistant cashier Phil Odens who closed the vault door. The daylight bandits secured $1,000 in cash. Little Rock lies in Lyon county west of Graettinger as corn picking runs and power pickers operate.

Raleigh in grave condition after Mankato operation

Postmaster O H Raleigh of Graettinger underwent an intestinal operation at Immanuel hospital in Mankato Monday. He was listed very serious through Tuesday night but rallied in the late afternoon and now has a fighting chance, though conditions remain grave. Mrs Raleigh and the children had traveled to visit family when the illness struck.

Emmetsburg High School defeated Spirit Lake 6 to 0 on the Emmetsburg gridiron. Earlier they beat Sibley 26 to 0 and fell to Storm Lake 14 to 12. Graettinger and Emmetsburg tied recently, with Graettinger rising in the county seat class.
