Mission at Catholic church closes after large Graettinger crowd

The Graettinger Catholic mission, led by Rev. Charles Cassidy of the Passionists, drew one of the week’s largest crowds and featured a tribute to Father Kelly after a highly praised closing sermon. Parishioners praise the mission’s success and Father Kelly’s four decades of service.

Sister of Andy Johnson Marry in Tama Iowa

Miss Gladys Faye Johnson of Spencer and Russell Hovinga of Webb were married October 3 1934 in the Tama Methodist parsonage. Rev W C Eckler officiated. They were attended by the bride’s brother and his wife Andy Johnson and wife. The bride wore blue velvet with tea roses. The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs S D Hovinga of Webb. After a luncheon they left for a honeymoon at the World’s Fair in Chicago and will live in Webb after October 15.

Dr Keeney Seeks Representative Seat in Times

Dr George H Keaney of Mallard announces candidacy for the office of acute representative on the Democratic ticket in this week’s Times. A well known Palo Alto County resident for about twenty five years, he has engaged in educational activities and community service.

Auto Crash Injures Miss Genevieve Mouily at Crippen Corner

Miss Genevieve Mouily suffered severe injuries in an auto accident at Crippen corner at two this morning. She was taken to Metabury hospital with little hope of recovery though alive at two this afternoon. The party returning from Spencer included Miss Catherine Phillips Joe Phillips and Victor Hands. a blind horse spooked the car causing the ditching. The machine was not badly wrecked and the three other occupants were only slightly hurt. Miss Mouily ran a beauty parlor in the Hand barber shop at Emmetebury and was about 28 years old.

Gamble Agency Store to Open Next Saturday

Roy V. Christensen of Algona will open a new Authorized Gamble Store agency in Grachtinger on October 18. The store, in the George Brothers building, will feature new fixtures and a wide merchandise range. Christensen and his wife have moved from Algona and plan strong local community support for the opening.

First Program Lyceum Course Was Splendid

Mr. John W. Frye presented a magic and art program to an appreciative audience in the high school assembly. The event showcased professional stage presence and educational value, promising strong follow ups as the IP.T.A. sponsors the next Lyceum numbers for the school library, with a November 20 date for the Cockle Concertiers recital.

The Clarence Jenkins sale of household goods Saturday afternoon drew many bidders with satisfactory prices. the auctioneers were Grodiandi & Reeves and H. Elsenbast clerked the sale, marking a very successful event.

Funeral Of Mrs John Griffin Held Friday

The funeral of Mrs. John Griffin of Waterlas was held Friday at the Catholic church in Graettinger with Rev. Father Kelly presiding. Interment followed in the Catholic cemetery northwest of town. She died Tuesday October 2 in Waterloo after a short illness at age 61, leaving sons Patrick and Ray and a Virginia brother among others. The Griffin family had long resided in Palo Alto county and Mrs. Griffin was a devout Catholic throughout life. The Times expresses sympathy to the bereaved family.

Mother of Dr. Jacobson Dies in Jewell

Mrs. Theo Jacobson of Jewell died Sunday after a short illness. Funeral held Tuesday in Jewell, burial beside her husband who died two years ago. She was 76. Survived by six children including Dr Olene Jacobson Graettinger Tanner Slayton MN Dr Lou Jacobson and Albert Jacobson of Jewell and Mrs Campbell and Mrs Queensland of Jewell. Albert formerly managed Farmers Store in Graettinger.

Pump House And Equipment Sold Saturday

Auction sale of the Graettinger pump house and pumping equipment drew a fair crowd. The brick pump house sold for 5756 dollars to John Han Sen, the engine and pump went for 9 dollars to George, and D C Barringer bought the heating stove for 10 dollars. Part of the building has been torn down since the sale and the ground will be cleared and beautified. The pumping gear had served Graettinger before the city water system shifted to electric equipment a couple of years ago.

Graettinger loses to Terril 12-7 in hard fought game

Graettinger high school football team fell 12 to 7 at Terril on Friday afternoon. The contest was hard fought from start to finish, with Graettinger showing a strong effort against Terril. An official was injured in a collision with players. Next Friday the team travels to Milford for another tough game.

Mr Norris and family traveled to Fort Dodge where Jack Dempsey served as referee for a wrestling show. Earl Wampler, who boxed in Graettinger’s Labor Day event, drew his match. Norris also visited Fort Dodge golf course and declined to admit breaking the course record. Corn Hog Meeting Honors Agriculture Policy in 1986 Vote

Farmers from Walnut and Vernon townships met at Hawkeye Theatre to discuss the corn hog program. They approved an adjustment program 60 to 29 and contract per farm adjustment 58 to 26, passing resolutions praising agricultural committees and urging production curtailment to restore fair prices. They thanked state chairman R. M. Evans and the state corn hog committee and limited Corn Hog control officers to contract signers.
