Fire Prevention Week Proclamation Issued in Iowa

Governor Robert D. Ray signed a proclamation designating October 3 9 as Fire Prevention Week in Iowa. Present were Deputy Public Safety Commissioner Robert G. Holetz and State Fire Marshal Wilbur Johnson, with Asst. State Fire Marshal Reynolds Hentges. Citizens urged to inspect homes using Fire Hazard Check Cards and ask for department inspections. Fire departments will issue cards to Grades 3 through 6 students for home inspections. Home checks include chimneys, electrical fuses, frayed cords, and charcoal handling. In 1975 Iowa residential fires totaled 1 923 with over 10 million in property losses and 58 of 92 fire deaths.

National Alert Sets Weeklong Civil Defense Exercise

A nationwide alert and warning drill is planned for the week of October 11 1976. The FLOODTIDE alerting phase starts October 13 with CHECKERBOARD and FADEOUT warning phases on October 14. CHECKERBOARD signals simulated enemy warning and FADEOUT marks exercise end across tone receivers indoors police fire radios cable TV CB radios and local broadcasters.

Officials and participants must report to Civil Defense headquarters in Emmetsburg within 24 hours after completion, detailing timing, receipt method, actions taken, and any comments.
