Thieves at Work Strike Berg Brennan Stores Ruthven
The Berg and Brennan general merchandise store and the Family Drug Store were entered on Sunday night through rear doors. A glass pane was removed, cash drawers opened, six clerks purses emptied totaling 7.10, and jewelry cases untouched. In the Drug Store a back window was broken and a Meerschaum pipe valued at 5.00 taken from a small box holding buffalo nickels. No other merchandise disappeared. the large safe was meddled with and the intruders likely familiar with the town. Local parties are blamed for the break-ins.

New Corn Disease Hits Scott County Farm
A newly identified corn sickness appears on Gustav Rusch’s farm in Scott county and spreads across the country. County agriculturalist G R Bliss estimates 5 percent of the crop could perish, risking $1000000 in losses from a $2,000,000 annual value. The disease shrivels stalks at joints, causes ears to fail to fill, and honeycombs the interior. Samples from Rusch’s stock are tested by Ames College plant pathology.

Needle Injury In Hand During House Work
Miss Bergum accidentally drove a needle into her hand while wringing a cloth to mop the floor. The needle lay hidden, located later by X ray with Dr. Wilson and Dr. Nane assisting. A two inch cut was made to remove it and Miss Berguin required chloroform during the operation. She is reported progressing well.

Found Guilty of First Degree Murder in Fort Dodge
George McDonald, known as the Chicago floater, was found guilty of first degree murder by a Fort Dodge jury. He stabbed a Dubuque man during a dispute over a last drink and received a life sentence. The sole defense offered was an alibi, but blood stains on his shirt were cited in the case.
