J R Brown carried for the P A T through the West Bend line to force a tie and edge the Pirates to an overtime victory. The week features results including Ruthven 6 Mallard 13 and West Bend defeating South Clay 20 with Marathon at Everly and Sioux Valley at Terril on October 5.
Giant hybrid tomato plant belonging to Mrs Donald Smith of Extra has reached seven feet tall and 11 feet wide, yielding 69 large tomatoes including a single 11 inch circumference fruit. Plant continues to bear many tomatoes on the vine awaiting ripening. Lily blooms raise timing questions for Lily Mrs Russell Wagoner of Iowa Falls.
LaVerne Hoffman broke through for a two yard loss at the Pirates one foot line. This decisive play secured the stand and helped the Pirates hold the Bulldogs at their goal line. See you at the football game Friday night.
Graettinger celebrates Homecoming with a Friday night game against Mallard, a 3-1 foe. Mallard has ten of eleven starters back after a win over Sioux Rapids. Graettinger varsity football also beat West Bend 26-20 in OT, ending their 10 game streak. Weekend events include a school barbecue bonfire parade dance and future games and curricular talks by principals Hampland and Ferrell. Senior citizen tickets were mailed. call 859-3286 if missing.
The Ninth Annual Powder Puff Bowl at Mount Marty College Yankton South Carolina will be Sunday October 7 at 2 PM. A small admission fee funds MMC scholarships. Betty Brown of Graettinger is listed among the players in this razzle dazzle flag football event. spectators line the sidelines.
Graettinger students will participate in a Fire Prevention Week drill October 7 to 13. Local Graettinger firemen have consistently cooperated with classroom presentations during the week, enhancing safety awareness for seniors using their Senior Citizen ticket program.
West Bend’s B team defeated Graettinger’s B squad 7-0 on Graettinger field Monday night. West Bend scored late in the fourth, converting the extra point for the win. Graettinger’s offense failed to reach a touchdown despite early chances.
The junior high Pirates beat Emmetsburg Catholic 16 8 at Evergreen Park on Tuesday September 25. Mike Elsenbast scored two touchdowns despite an ankle injury. Randy Rients had two TDs, one on an 80 yard run and another on a 60 yard pass and run. Terry Masters and Jody Dykhuizen also scored as Masters led the defense holding the Irish to 8 points.
The State Services for Crippled Children invites family physicians to refer children under 21 with otolaryngological issues for a clinic on October 25 at United Methodist Church in Pocahontas. Roger Will of the Soil Conservation Service reports a holding tank 40 by 10 by 6 feet on the James Schmidt farm near Malland. The tank, linked to inside gutters, stores a 180 day supply of animal waste to avoid freezing issues and water pollution from winter melt.
Dr E H Kromer of Waverly and his wife LaVera celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary last month. On August 1 he marked the fiftieth anniversary of starting his dental practice in Waverly.
