Natural Landmark Areas Added to National Registry

Iowa’s Smith’s Slough near Ruthven, a 639 acre tract with 398 acres of water in glacial pothole lakes, is the largest natural prairie pothole lake complex in Iowa and a key waterfowl habitat. Anderson Goose Lake in Hamilton County, Wisconsin and sites in Minnesota were also named. The designation aims to preserve nationally significant natural values regardless of ownership and dates back to 1962 with 396 areas recognized.
