Joe Thompson notes that FFA seniors in Mr. Chuck Moser's fourth period farm operations class purchase a farm, save $15,200, and plan to apply farm techniques they choose. Students consult a market-price list Moser maintains, showing prices a year ahead. The project aims to reveal potential earnings, or lack thereof, to the seniors.
GHS Principal Dave Haggard notes Iowa law banning tobacco on school premises and during school activities. He recalls suspending a student for tobacco use and says the school board chose a three day suspension while enforcing the law. He praises the student body for not having an empty cigarette pack or smoke smell.
This week's mystery student is 17 years old and lives in town. He has blond hair, green eyes, and is involved in band. His pastimes include riding his bike and listening to records. Favorite foods are hamburgers and bacon sandwiches. He enjoys band and P.E. as classes.
The Pirettes were defeated by Sioux Valley Soo's 8 to 3 at Linn Grove on September 23. Sioux Valley built early runs, with Pirettes scoring in the fourth and fifth. Winterhouse earned the win, McQuown took the loss with Jani Cox relieving. Beck Weber led with a triple for the Pirettes as Robin Anderson Cox Sampson and Shelly added singles.
October 5 through 10 features class competitions for freshmen to seniors with themed days Hat Day Stomp Em Jersey Day Sock it to Em Kiss a Pirate and more. A baby picture contest costs a quarter to enter with a 5 prize and 20 class points. Mr Muscle voting and a pep rally skit winner earn 100 points. Spirit discs sell for 5 cents.
Mary Ellen Peters, a Craettinger School student from Estherville, moved to a farm west of Graettinger after living all her life there. She comes from a family of thirteen children, is in the choir, and enjoys writing poetry, riding horses, and reading. The article lists school staff and mentions local players with singles. Next game was Tuesday September 30 with arena starting time at Julie Kulow.
Graettinger High School faced Central Webster of Burnside in a decisive loss as Robert Tarbox posed the questions and Central Webster answered quickly. Darnell Pettengill Jim Graettinger Catherine Elsenbast Sue Jacobsen Steve Dawston and Bob Mesenbrink played for Graettinger with Ron Brockmeyer as sponsor.
Graettinger Pirettes lost to Ruthven Ramettes 5 to 7 on September 24. Ruthven built leads, Graettinger tied with a two run burst in the second, then Ruthven pulled ahead again in the fourth and sixth. Ruthven pitcher Rhonda Meyer fanned four while walking four. Graettinger pitcher Lee McQuown struck out two. Jackie Kulow homered and added a single for Graettinger.
South Pacific preparations move forward as rehearsals start with music director Alan Zevenbergen praising progress. He notes nine of twelve first act scenes nearly finished, while crew builds stage props and back drops. Eleanor Jacobsen assists alongside Judy Jackson, Linda Andersen, and Nancy Chrestiansen.
The Graettinger High School Band weekly feature highlights the saxophone section. Altos Catherine Elsenbast Becky Weber Barb Miller and tenor Vernon Reitz are profiled with notes on roles grades and past contest success. Mr Foy comments on student behavior and the small school’s strong curriculum while noting crowded industrial arts facilities and his coaching duties.
Melt marshmallows with margarine then blend in Koogle vanilla peanut butter spread. Stir in crisp rice cereal until coated and press into a 13 by 9 inch pan. Chill and cut into squares.
Graettinger Jr High football beat Emmetsburg Catholic 22-0 on Sept 23. Terry Heller connected with Tim Lewers for a 13 yard TD, Tim Leness added a 2 yard score, and Tim Leners notched an 8 yard run as Pat Brobst and the team conversions padded the lead. Coach Yarnes praised hustle while noting blocking and defense held Emmetsburg Catholic out of the 20. Next game is Oct 1 at Ruthven Jr High.
