Ayrshire teams clash with Graettinger in a Tuesday night double bill at Ayrshire High School. The boys travel to Graettinger Friday while Ruthven hosts Graettinger. Local prep basketball promises competitive action as Graettinger seeks two road wins and Ayrshire eyes a strong home showing.
A Fairfield township man visited Emmetsburg after an election and bought a car. The sales manager claimed speedometers are wasteful, saying speed can be gauged by noises from the lamps, fenders, windshield, and bones as speed rises.
George Meiners of Ringsted Iowa and Virgie L Miner of Graettinger Iowa were joined in marriage at the Baptist parsonage 709 E Des Moines St Ringsted on Wednesday November 15 at noon. Rev J Arthur Hurley officiated with Gladys Miner and C Meiners as attendants. The couple left for a wedding trip to Kewanee Illinois and other points and will reside on a farm two miles south of Ringsted.
The Times investigates when Thanksgiving falls on November 80th and notes a link that Christmas day lands on a Monday when it occurs. It cites 1911 and 1916 as Thanksgiving dates on November 80th, marking three such instances in twelve years, and suggests ordering greeting cards for Christmas and New Year.
A Storm Lake report to the Des Moines Register says Frank W. Goodness and his daughter Venetta have returned home from Algona hospital. He is recovering from a crushed hand and Venetta is improving from a badly mangled arm. The child must lie still with the injured arm in a cant.
The Postal Bulletin cites Dr. Frank Crane urging care in addressing and packaging to prevent delays. It notes 25 million pieces are mishandled, with losses rising from careless knots, flimsy wrap, and defective addresses. It calls for public education and earlier mailing to ease load on machines and staff.
Green mourns death of his sister who died Sunday morning after illness. She was a woman of years, survived by husband and a son about twenty two. Sister had spent months at Rochester consulting Mayo specialists. Mr Green receives sympathy from many friends in sorrow.
Catholic Ladies Aid society will hold a bazaar at the Hawkeye theatre on Tuesday November 28 offering needlework articles for sale. Meals will be served at noon and in the evening, a dance with Bartleman orchestra follows, promising a splendid time for attendees. John Clemenson has taken over the acetylene welding plant from Benson & Conway and runs an extensive display this week.
Y C Wiermann reports his Junior Business Builder campaign is booming with about thirty contestants in the race. Names and standings will be published in a couple of weeks. Keep tab on Ma Wiermann's advertising.
The Spencer Reporter notes state auto men collected 26 dollars in fees and penalties from W. J. McCarter of Spencer after he appeared before Justice Bender and was fined for operating a motor truck without a license. They also fined a Dickinson county man who reported his Hudson stored and used borrowed plates for a Ford without a registration card, totaling 103 dollars 90 cents to settle.
Carl Christiansen west of town suffered a broken leg a few days ago when his horse slipped during a cattle drive. He is recovering well but will be unable to move about for some time.
A box social and dance are planned at the Contex school house in Vernon township Friday evening November 24. The program starts at eight o clock and attendees are asked to bring baskets. Local teacher Lillian Bradley invites all.
H I Wikert to hold a closing out sale on Wednesday November 29 at his Graettinger area farm. sale features 122 head of livestock including seven work horses thirty cattle seventy Chester White hogs fifteen Shropshire ewes poultry and substantial machinery with a Cletrac tractor motor cultivator and more. Max well car to be sold nine months credit offered. sale begins at 10 am lunch served at noon.
Two sales are set in the territory next week. On Tuesday November 28 the G I Moore estate closing out sale will be held on the farm two miles east of Wallingford along the gravel road. On Wednesday November 29 H E Wikert will conduct a large auction of livestock and machinery at his place a few miles east of Gyrnes river.
Successful breeder TR Hepp of Wallingford was in brief at the Times office Saturday. Hepp ships Poland China hogs to governors and buyers in Indiana and Oregon. A daughter of a hog shipped to Indiana's governor won first and grand champion at the Indiana state fair. Hepp says he saved 109 pigs from 18 sows last spring.
A box social and dance will be held at the District No 6 school house in Walnut township on Friday evening December 1. The school sits one mile north of Osgood and three miles south of the Wolfe school. Miss Frances Hendricks teaches there and a cordial invitation is extended to all.
Lars Roseland of St James Minnesota died following a surgical operation for intestinal trouble. He was about twenty five, survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Sam Roseland and six siblings. Funeral was held in St James with relatives attending from Lost Island area.
The Red Cross Society conducts its annual roll call during November and December. Members may pay the $1.00 fee at their bank to receive a membership receipt. The drive aims to document World War service and wartime wounds to aid in obtaining government compensation.
Col Ben F Reeves and associates left by auto for Guthrie county to attend a large land and general farm sale. Carl Spies aims to buy the farm. John Rathman plans to drive home with a $8,000 span of mules. Reeves among the auctioneers. Graettinger parties expected to stir up activity at the sale. S. P. Duhn buys Wm Matters residence for $3,000, a bargain versus years past.
