Tragic Train Collision Claims Antone Guerdet

Antone Guerdet, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guerdet of Crookston Minnesota, sustained severe injuries when a passenger train struck his auto at a rural crossing. He died at Cole hospital shortly after, despite being rushed there for treatment. The crossing is described as unusually dangerous with limited visibility. The accident occurred around 11:80 and remains under investigation.

Witness recounts fatal crossing accident and train impact

An eye witness describes the crossing tragedy as the engine whistle warned late. Mr Jackman and Mr Guardet failed to see or hear the train until impact. The machine dragged forward, striking Jackman’s side and throwing Guardet about fifty feet from the wreckage.

Armistice Day Programs At Hawkeye Theatre

American Legion held Armistice Day events at the Hawkeye theatre with Commander Art Henningsen presiding. Dr. J J Bushnell and Rev. C J Mekkelson gave principal addresses. Miss Elizabeth Spies sang, LeRoy Bartleman played violin, and community songs were sung with piano by Mrs John Jackman. A later Thanksgiving program and dinner were announced by the Ladies Aid Society. Harry Mahiman suffered serious injuries from a blasting powder explosion Saturday night and was hospitalized Sunday morning.

O'Brien case yields $9,000 verdict in Emmetsburg

The Emmetsburg jury awarded Gene O'Brien $9,000 in the Rock Is and The O'Brien case ending Friday. The defense reportedly plans to appeal to the supreme court. A cold snap blanketed the area with snow from Friday to Sunday.

He outlined membership growth from 21 founders to a large nation wide presence with vast insurance and tuberculosis sanatorium benefits, noting eligibility for men aged 16 to 60 of good character and health.

John Poland Weds Graettinger Girl

John Poland of DuBois Nebraska wed Miss Mable Louise Allen daughter of Mr and Mrs T V Allen of Graettinger at the Lutheran parsonage this afternoon. Rev Sande officiated with Eugene Poster as best man and Geneva Gabrielson as bridesmaid. A wedding dinner followed at the bride’s home and the couple plan a brief trip then residence in Avoca Iowa while Poland works for the Rock Island. They expect to spend the winter in DuBois. The bride, a longtime Graettinger resident, is admired locally for her public school education and telephone office work. The groom is a Rock Island employee known for his reliability and is described as industrious and frugal. The Times offers congratulations to the couple.

Box Social Planned by Lost Island Districts 4 and 9

A joint box social organized by Districts 4 and 9 to be held Friday November 25 starting at 8:80 PM near District 4 two miles west of Lost Island. Ladies are asked to bring boxed suppers for two. Grace and Zelda Prichard, teachers, announce the event.

Station Robber Arrested After $700 Found In Suitcase

William Mall, Northwestern railroad employee, was arrested by an Hagle Grove detective in Britt, Kos­suth County. He is charged with robbing the Britt station, reportedly carrying $700 in cash in his suitcase.

Spencer Defeats Estherville Eleven 18 to 0 in Big Nine clash

Spencer defeated Be therville 18 to 0 on Friday in a surprising high school football result. Estherville had an off day as their Danes club postponed the Thanksgiving dance at Woodman hall, postponed to a later date by the Woodman lodge.

Maple Hill and Graettinger to Clash in Friday Double Header

Maple Hill and Graettinger will meet in a Friday night high school gym double header with both boys and girls teams in action. Graettinger boys aim to rebound after a close loss to Armstrong 20 to 17 while Graettinger and Maple Hill girls also seek wins. Attendance is encouraged with the usual gate. The Red Cross drive runs November 11 to 24.

The Bachelor club plans a three act comedy drama titled The Cheerful Liar. It will be presented in December with the latter part as the likely show date.

Towa Trio Triumphs Over Indiana in Final Away Contest

Towa University football team defeated Indiana 41 to a doubtful score to cap an away victory. The champions schedule next weekend’s home game against Northwestern for the division title in an upcoming final.
