John O'Connor a pioneer citizen died Monday noon after months of poor health at his home. He was the father of Mrs. Eugene McCarty and his funeral was held Wednesday forenoon at the Catholic Church.
John O'Connor, longtime Graettinger resident and notable farmer, died at his daughter’s home after months of illness. Born in Ireland in 1845, he immigrated to the United States in 1864, lived in Utah, and settled near Graettinger 47 years ago. He married Rose Montgomery in 1877 and helped organize local agricultural ventures. Survived by one daughter and siblings, his funeral was held at the Catholic church, with burial in the Catholic cemetery.

Elmer Miner, son of Mr and Mrs Art Miner of east of town, was injured Saturday while operating a corn husking machine. His hand sustained severe damage requiring amputation of the forefinger and index finger, with the third finger badly mashed and possibly to be removed. The hand is lacerated and crushed, with the extent undetermined. his physician hopes to save the third finger and prevent blood poisoning. Friends express regret at his misfortune.
Worthington high school football posted a 180 to 0 victory over Spirit Lake and followed with a 70 to 0 win against St. Marys of Emmetsburg. The reporter notes Worthington’s dominating season so far.
Strongman Wladimir Zbyszko defeats Earl Caddock in Des Moines to retain the wrestling girdle. The first fall lasts 1 hour 20 minutes, the second 24 minutes, with Caddock noted as clever but lighter than the bulky challenger.
Captain McHenry, a gallant Des Moines officer who died early in the war, was laid to rest with full military honors in Des Moines Sunday. About 10,000 people attended the funeral services in the capital city.

Mrs. Gus Merklin, a young wife and mother, died October 31 in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were held at the M E church with interment in the parochial cemetery. Ida Marie Grodland, born February 4 1887 at Lisbon North Dakota, married Gus Merklin November 1 1905. Survived by husband two sons Leonard and Mervin mother Mary Grodland two sisters and three brothers. The community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
A cookie cracker and coffee demonstration will be held at the C A Jensen store Saturday of this week. Special prices will be made on crackers and on certain coffee brands during the event.

Auctioneer Grodland and partner Hepp announce a closing out sale for H Olson and Son on Wednesday November 16 two miles north of Wallingford. Free lunch at 11:80. Armistice Night A dance will be held Friday evening November 11 at Woodman hall in Graettinger. It is styled as a second Fourth of July with four big times planned. Music by the Wiegmann orchestra. Old time steps on the program. Public invited. Admission 85 cents including war tax.
The Legion program at Legion quarters Monday featured an exhibition wrestling match between Ben F Reeves and Fred Grobmier. Reeves trains for a forthcoming battle in Graefinger Friday, and the bout drew a large crowd, adding realism to the evening. The hosts thanked the wrestlers for their assistance, and a feed concluded the successful gathering.
Chris Christofferson reports that forty men with twenty seven teams husked 1400 bushels of corn at Charles Bonstead's home in one day. Twenty five expert-cook women provided food as neighbors aided the ailing farmer, showing community spirit in action.
Secretary Wallace advised farmers to burn corn instead of coal this winter arguing corn at 10c per bushel equals coal at 5 per ton and 32c equals 16 per ton while saving shelling and hauling costs. Level Boy Recovering Nicely After Horse Accident Near Graettinger A week ago Monday the son of Mr and Mrs J D Level was thrown from a horse en route to Graettinger for school. He left hospital early this week and recovery continues though full healing will take time. his escape was miraculous.

Des Moines wrestler Reeves visits for Armistice Night at Hawkeye Theatre with Ben Reeves in city event. Preliminaries begin at 8 o clock.
Friday evening features a two out of three finish match at the Hawkeye theatre with Jess Reimer Westergard of Des Moines opposing Graettinger’s Ben I Reeves. Reimer is a top US wrestler training with Zbyszko, weighing over 200 pounds, while Reeves is a seasoned Northwest Iowa star known for his experience and skill. Preliminaries start at 8 pm with general admission 50 cents and ringside 75 cents, ladies admitted free. Reservations through Reeves or referee Bert Montgomery.
The third annual Ruthven Rebekah lodge banquet was hosted by local members with Graettinger and Emmetsburg Rebekahs in attendance. A multi course feast followed by a program and social dance concluded the evening. attendees report a splendid time. An upcoming event notes a Woodman lodge open night on November 14 with National Lecturer C. Marines delivering an address, urging members to attend.
