Estimates show retroactive wage increases from January 1 1946 would add about 619 million to the 1040 wage bill, lifting wartime wage growth to roughly 44 percent since the war began. With 1946 expenses inflated by material, fuel, and supply costs, total increases exceed 1.5 billion over prewar levels. Prices for materials rose one third in 1945 and will push 1946 costs higher, while railroad material costs may reach half a billion above 93‑price projections.
