Funeral Held For Patrick Bannon A Graettinger Pioneer

The Graettinger Times reports funeral services for Patrick Bannon held Saturday at the Catholic church with Rev. Father Kelly officiating. Burial followed at Holy Cross near Dubuque. Bannon, born July 8 1858 at Holy Cross Iowa, died March 28 1938 west of Graettinger after a lengthy illness, survived by four sons Raymond Joseph Leo Frank and wife Bridget Dunnigan and history of family ties in the region highlighted by tributes from friends and neighbors.

Graettinger Students to Compete in Emmetsburg Spelling Contest

Eight graders Virginia McDonald Mildred Wikert and Ruth Anderson along with seventh grader Clifford Schurmann will represent Graettinger grade school in the spelling contest at Emmetsburg this Saturday. This marks the first round of the state contest with another group to follow in the inter-state event a week later. The community wishes the contestants good luck.

Market Day Sale in Graettinger Saturday

The Graettinger Market Day sale will be held Saturday April 1 after plans formed for weeks. Items include a complete line of household goods to be sold at the rear of the First National Bank starting shortly after one o clock. The rest of the sale runs at Graettinger sale yards near the Wisconsin Lumber Co corner with Gradlland Reever as auctioneers and the First National Bank of Gradllinger as clerk.

Local Carpenters Secure Two Good Contracts

Gilbaugh and Clemensen of Grachtninger have won contracts for a new farm home near Emmetsburg replacing a fire wreck. The Palo Alto Mutual Insurance Association let the bid on March 23 for a 28 by 40 foot one story dwelling with six bids. They also secured a contract to build a barn on the Ted Christiansen place west of Grachtninger, an 80 by 30 foot structure with Wisconsin Lumber Co supplying materials. Work on the barn starts late May or early June. Wallingford market day sale postponed due to snow and slush with a new date to be announced, possibly April 8.

Free Concert At Estherville Sunday by Local Orchestras

Estherville hosts a joint concert by the Estherville Little Symphony and the Philharmonic society on Sunday at 3 p m in the Roosevelt Auditorium. Get Acquainted Day at Graettinger High a Big Success

Tuesday's Get Acquainted Day at Graettinger High School drew 68 eighth graders from local country schools and the Graettinger Junior High. Supt McMullen and the faculty organized activities, including classes, a 45 minute program, lunch, and basketball games, with praise for the day and hope many guests return as students next year.

New Paint and Auto Repair Shop Opens in Graettinger

B W Palmer of Sherburne Minnesota and A A Gilbertson also of Sherburne have leased the Hansen Building east of the Hawkeye Theatre and will operate a paint and auto repair shop. They plan to open next Monday. CG Fleming, who has occupied the building, will move his cream eye and poultry business to the Grorl Jund store at Robbins Avenue and the state road. Return Of The Drake Estate Papers In County Custody

Sheriff Montgomery testified in federal court at Sioux City and secured Drake Estate papers in a Mallard safe. The papers and receipts, taken from Amos Hartseck of Laurens and WN Landes of Mallard, are now held by the county attorney after Hartseck and Landes sought their return in court. Sheriff Montgomery and County Attorney Smith appeared in Sioux City.

Mrs. Bernie L. Roberts of West Bend died in a Winona Minnesota hospital after surgeries on March 11 and March 16, ages at death, born December 7 1895. She was married May 18 1915 to Bernie L. Roberts and is survived by a 24 year old son and a 7 year old daughter.

Irish Bonds To Be Paid In The Near Future

Joseph Connelly, representing the Irish Free State, travels to Washington to arrange with President Roosevelt for payment of ten million dollars in Irish bonds sold in 1920 in the U S. He says $1.26 will be paid for each $1 value, a move to settle the debt of honor and shame the French for refusing interest owed to the United States.

Wannamaker Injured In Fall At Terril Store

Terril man Lou Wannamaker fell into an elevator shaft at his store in Terril last week after stepping into a darkened area. He suffered head and neck injuries, was treated at a nearby home, and returned to Osberville the next day. He had recently survived a serious automobile accident.

Estherville Election Returns Rerun Mayor and Treasurer

Estherville held a warm city election on Monday with M. K. Whelan reelected mayor by 1,049 votes to 716 for Charles Bixby. Jon Orvis defeated Gladys Fint for treasurer 1,096 to 622. Council members elected include Hi A. Gaarde Tyger Carl Mickelson and Ri H Green.

Ruthven Fire Destroys Two Buildings Monday

A Monday night blaze in Ruthven destroyed the Art King garage and the adjacent Washington barber shop and Henderson bakery. Fire departments from Emmetsburg and Spencer aided but water supply hampered operations. Estimated loss $10,000 with some insurance coverage. local residents noted due to ties to Graettinger families.

Belvidere crash kills Spencer man in Chevrolet test ride

Charles Wilson, 24, Spencer, died in a Belvidere hospital after a Sunday night crash while driving a Chevrolet from Hart Norton. Tony Long of Spencer and Wilson were returning from the factory when another car, carrying two men, struck their vehicle, fled the scene. Wilson suffered a skull fracture and chest injuries. Mrs. Wilson is a sister of Dr. A. A. Thelle of Emmetsburg.
