Tuesday evening at Estherville High School the visiting Estherville team defeated the local squad 29 to 14. The first half ended 18 to 4, then 11 to 10 in the second half. A separate game saw Seventh and Eighth grades beat the Freshmen 29 to 11 in a fast, rough contest refereed by Mr. Johnson.
The Palo Alto County Farm Improvement Association reports on seed corn tests from about 300 farmers. Of 12,240 kernels tested, 9,525 strong sprouts, 1,887 weak, and 828 dead. Only 77.5 percent showed a strong sprout. Farmers are urged to perform individual ear tests to improve yields and add about 500,000 dollars to the 1917 corn crop. Farmers may submit six kernels from ten ears for free testing. The notice also notes oat smut losses in Iowa and suggests formaldehyde treatment as a remedy.
