Mrs. S R Young died in Iowa City after a tumor removal operation. She was 58 and survived by seven children and fifteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Graettinger with M E church rites and lodge honors.
A Saturday caucus in Graet tinger produced two distinct tickets. The Republican ticket lists mayor D. W. Cameron and councilmen Clarence Axelton Fred Simonsen Louis Christiansen Clarence Cletamensen and John Wikert with Joe Gabrielson as assessor and no nominee for treasurer. The Citizen's ticket from the Thursday caucus names mayor Dr. L. L. Lindsey councilmen P. J. McCarty Martin Myhre Henry Hansen John Swift and Wm Penn with S. EB. Sandvig as assessor and Elizabeth Jensen as treasurer.
Mrs Bergite Jacobson of Callender Iowa died Sunday evening February 28 after long illness marked by strokes. Born June 8 1842 in North Nummendahl Norway she was nearly 84. She married Halvor Asieson in 1870 and later Andrew Jacobson of Callender Iowa. Survived by three sons Asle Ruthven Ole Bancroft and a step son Martin Jacobsen and a daughter Mrs Ole Anderson plus eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral held at Callender cemetery with many Ruthven and Ruthven area neighbors praising her pioneer character. She endured hardship and reared her family as a Christian mother. Our country owes gratitude to such women.
During 1925 Barringer, a local livestock buyer, paid out $688000 to farmers in this territory for cattle and hogs. The sum is described as immense and notable in local trade.
A shipment valued at 12000 dollars left Gracttinger and Wallingford creamery facilities on Tuesday. The load included 18 080 dozen eggs and a carload of butter. A.J. Johnson shipped the goods and the incident involved Grasttinger Fallow and Wallingford.
V L O Connor was chosen manager of the Graettinger Hye Stock Shipping association at a board meeting held yesterday. He is known locally for leading the Farmers Grain Company and is expected to keep the association flourishing. A producers meeting March 12 at Hawkeye theatre drew 184 signers to the membership contract. Directors named include George Graettinger, A V Bormann, Jacob Frick for three years and J M Robinson, S W Burg for two and one years respectively. The board elected Graettinger president, Robinson vice president, Bormann secretary. Knute Eape and County Agent Clarke addressed the gathering. Last week temporary manager D E McCarty shipped two cars of livestock to Chicago at a satisfactory price. Further office details will be published. The association aims for strong growth in the territory.
Four Ruthven youths wed in a double ceremony at the M. I. parsonage with Rev C J Mekkelserg officiating. The couples are John H Crookshank and Maude A Hynes, and Henry Crookshank and Luella M Brand. All residents hail from Ruthven areas, with families listed. The Times extends congratulations to the couples.
An interesting debate was held in the High School Assembly Room on Tuesday evening. The topic was Resolved That The Present Jury System Be Abolished In Favor Of A Three Judge Trail System. The afffirmative was represented by Rev C J Mekkelson A H Henning sen and Harold Harrington while C H Raleigh Supt White and Miss Hayes spoke for the negative. The judges were H B Hetzler Vincent Kelly and Charles Spies. The negative side received a two to one decision.
Firefighters were called Sunday afternoon to extinguish a blaze in the basement sand testing room of the First National Bank. An oil stove explosion caused the fire, confined to one room. Lloyd Gardner and George Penn operated the testing room. The five story brick bank sustained only scorched woodwork and doors with limited damage.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Neat of east at town mourn the death of their infant baby born a week ago and died the following Friday. Funeral services were held Sunday and the remains taken to Ruthven for burial. The Neats have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.
Charley Jensen advertises a hardware sale in this week’s Times with a regular 9c sale in progress and hundreds of items at reduced prices. Some items are quoted at special prices, valid only while stock lasts, as shown in the ad.
Misa Dorothy Myhre of Graettinger claimed first in the pre sub district declamatory contest at Emmetsburg on Monday evening, earning a spot in the state contest to be held there next Tuesday. Four contestants entered the dramatic division with Myhre, Alice Berg, Mildred Bergeson, and Thelma Keeney.
Charley Jensen's hardware sale began with a brisk opening as early shoppers crowded the store for bargains. Hundreds of items fill the tables while a new pennies design decorates the north display window signaling a promising, successful sale ahead.
Graettinger fell to Keswick 57 to 36 in the state tournament at Grand Junction. Keswick also eliminated Marshalltown 47 to 46, while Grand Junction beat Milford 24 to 21 with Milford holding the lead until the final minute.
Members of the M E Ladies Aid Society plan an annual bazaar and supper at Woodman Hall on Saturday March 20. An afternoon lunch will be served and a hot supper begins at six o clock with a 25 cent charge.
A married man with a large family seeks work to support his children. He has been without work most of the winter and asks interested parties to send a card to box 222 Graettinger Town.
Eighth grade and freshman basketball squads from Emmetsburg visited Graettinger Monday evening and both Graettinger teams won. The games were close and hard fought, delivering a lively show for fans. Graettinger also reported a live stock shipment record, with 114 cars sent out since January 1, vastly surpassing last year.
Mrs Ira Gardner of Chicago mourns her father’s death, noting he was a stranger to the local community. The notice mentions Mrs Gardner’s mother as the sister of Mrs Charles Harrington and references ongoing business at Garder & Penn with a rough slogan about seeds and fire.
Monday evening Hans Carstensen and Hans Jensen of Maple Hill near Ringsted were killed when a Northwestern train struck their Ford car at a grade crossing. Jensen died instantly. Carstensen died later at Coleman hospital from a fractured skull. Jensen leaves a wife and one child, Carstensen a wife and seven children. Witnesses were children at a nearby farm.
A booster meeting is in progress at the Lost Island Creamery today with speakers of prominence expected to address daily topics. The Lost Island string band will perform and lunch will follow. A fuller report will appear later. The creamery previously held a similar gathering a year ago and it was a success.
C Richardson of the McCarthy farm northeast of Grach tinger announces a closing out sale Friday March 19 featuring horses mules cattle hogs and farm machinery. Display ad appears in this week’s Times.
Wallingford prepares for a large market day with a noon dinner served by the Ladies Aid society. After the meal, livestock machinery and household goods will be auctioned, with Jorstad Hardware listing new machinery. Weather permitting, an immense crowd is expected on March 20.
H S Lowman and Son announce an auction on March 28 at the Roy Lowman farm three miles east of Walingfoul starting at noon with free lunch. The sale includes 9 good horses 11 head of best milch cows 10 fall pigs a large farm machinery list and a complete threshing outfit featuring an Alton Taylor 42 64 separator and Nichols Shephard 20 75 engine with pump belts and related gear.
Graettinger will hold a big market day sale Saturday March 27 with auctioneers noting it will be the last sale of the season. Last year many sales occurred but costs outweighed commissions, so two sales are planned this year. Further particulars to be announced later.
The Graettinger basketball team to the state tournament at Grand Junction received contributions from many locals. Gifts ranged from 50 cents to eight dollars totaling 38.50, supporting travel and expenses for the season which reopens in April with American and National leagues and the Rifian.
Gus Baedke of southwest Graettinger and Christine Kilting daughter of Claus Kilting west of town were united in marriage at Estherville on Wednesday March 10. Rev Otis Lang officiated. Witnesses were Theodore Baedke and Hannah Kilting. The couple will live on the groom's farm southwest of Graettinger. Both families are well known in the community. The bride is described as winsome and generous and plans to stay in the area. The groom is depicted as a capable, popular young farmer. The Times offers hearty congratulations and wishes for a long and happy marriage.
Mira Veuretz of Los Angeles writes she enjoyed the Iowa picnic held February 27 in California. She met HH Leslie Wild ey, John Herberger, Alice Petersen, Frank Bern dorfner, Mrs Sorenson and daughter, and a brother of C B Lawson. Attendance was exceptionally large.
Werman Elsenbast explains that an oil stove exploded Sunday in the seed testing room of First National Bank basement. Reporters seek details on corn stage at the moment of blast as bank officials note the regular meeting followed, and a claim to provide a special product.
Wallingford reports indicate changes in ownership and leasing. George Gunderson buys the Knute Amdahl garage building and residence. Chester Yorreson acquires the Crim oil tanks and wagon and leases the service station east of Wallingford, bringing a strong local business sense to the area.
