Iowa History Week Themes and a 1885 Dragoon Expedition
The 1933 Iowa History Week theme is The White Tide Breaks, following last year’s Civil Government focus. June 7 marks 1885 when US dragoons from Fort Des Moines, led by Lt Col Stephen Watts Kearny, explored the Raccoon Fork for a military post and negotiated with Wabasha Sioux. Albert Lea kept notes, later published as Notes on Wisconsin Territory. Lea linked Iowa’s name to the Iowa river’s beauty. The Palimpsest issue on Iowa in 1886 supports education programs, and the State Historical Society plans a reprint of Lea’s cattle book for libraries.

Trend Toward Shifting 30 Percent Corn Land To Other Crops
Iowa extension specialists report more signers of corn hog contracts are shifting the full 30 percent of corn land to small grain, hay, or pasture. Northwestern and southern Iowa show the clearest trend, though total acreage moved from corn may not exceed last year. Farmers cite guaranteed income, flexible rental payments, better crop rotation, early feed needs, and forage reserves as reasons for taking out the full 30 percent. The shift aligns with the 1935 corn hog program goals and keeps corn production tied to hog production.
