Al Graettinger Fifth in Checker Meet at Ma therville

Twenty one players competed in a checker tournament at Ma therville with Will Cook and J Samuelson leading Group A and Wil Cook and J Sammons strong in Group B. Final standings placed Graettinger fifth and Robinson sixth amid a long, error filled set of rounds and tied results.

County wide weed eradication meeting announced

Emmetsburg will host a county wide weed eradication meeting at the courthouse on March 12 at 1 30 p m Local officials including supervisors township trustees weed commissioners and county agents will attend Specialist R H Porter from the Extension Service lows State College will assist in planning The meeting aims to plan an educational campaign to teach farmers weed habits and eradication methods Similar gatherings are being held in 27 counties this spring and 18 last year.

First Lutheran Ladies’ Aid to Meet With Mrs Fogde

The First Lutheran Ladies Aid Society will meet with Mrs Myron Rogde on Wednesday March 11 with Mrs P C Fogde assisting. An invitation is extended to all attendees. Also the Legion and Auxiliary host Tuesday night events with cards and luncheon follow up. Mrs D C Barringer entertained Amari Legion and Auxiliary Tuesday evening with games and a luncheon. St Paul’s Ladies’ Aid to meet at Mrs Louis Christtengen’s home in Grachtinger on Wednesday March 11 for annual business meeting. All members urged to attend. Betty Mills celebrated her fifth birthday Monday with friends, games, and a lunch. Mrs Win Lammora’s birthday party was held Tuesday at the home of Mr and Mrs Harvey Nichtern with about thirty guests and cake and ice cream.

Doerning Takes Second in State Wrestling Meet

Bernard Dourning of Graettinger earned second place in the heavyweight division at the state high school wrestling tournament in Ames. He lost the finals to Simons of Cherokee by a narrow margin after both wrestlers advanced from the northwest Iowa district. Doering opened with Moore of Shelowa Training School, won in overtime, then defeated Henning of Cresco before losing to Simons in the title bout. He secured second by pinning Finchbohn of New Hampton in under two minutes. Graettinger fans followed the broadcast anxiously as the hometown star earned statewide recognition.

Lenten Meetings Fellowship in English and Prayer

All day Sunday and every evening the meetings will be conducted in English with day sessions at 10 am and 2 pm. The theme is Psalm 40, one of the Psalms of the Cross. School election set for March 9 in city

The school election will be held in this city next Monday, March 9, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. City Hall serves as the polling place. A three year term director to succeed S.E. Sandvig will be chosen.
