Grass tetany in cattle on catch pastures
Owners in many sections face grass tetany among cattle grazing on lush pastures of young wheat rye or barley. It arises from calcium magnesium and lime imbalances and presents with grazing apart uncertain gait rolling eyes frothing at the mouth and possible fits. Prompt veterinary treatment with calcium and magnesium salts stored in the bloodstream can save most affected cattle but delays may prove fatal. Preventive steps include feeding well cured hay at night before turning to lush pastures and providing a mineral salt lick containing bone meal magnesium and stock salt starting two weeks before the danger season and continuing through the grazing period.
