Two men from Martin County Minnesota waived preliminary hearing in Algona after a steer theft case. A neighbor spotted a missing steer, leading to checks of ownership via a truck and a Minnesota motor vehicle record. Burgess and Lloyd were arrested in Fairmont and brought to Algona by the Kossuth County Sheriff. John McBride, recently released from confinement due to rheumatism, enjoyed a warm day and may seek further treatment in Jordan Minnesota. C. A. Jensen and his brother visited Fenton to inspect the new Jensen-Rolfson store opened June 3.
Mrs J L Mahan of south of Graettinger suffered a broken left arm above the wrist when she slipped and fell Wednesday evening last week. The injury was caused by the heavy rain making the ground slippery. She is reported about as usual, though the left hand and arm are out of commission.
Miss Vivian Wolfe daughter of Mr and Mrs Lorne Wolfe east of Gradtfinger, united in marriage with Hjelmer Jasperson on Sunday June 4 at the parochial house officiated by Rev Father Kelly. Both will reside near Grad finger and work at Martin Peterson place. The bride comes from a well regarded family and the groom is a Minnesota native who has been employed locally for years. The Times extends best wishes to the couple.
Indications point to a rough feed shortage in Iowa next winter with hay and alfalfa supplies light after winter losses. Soybeans are promoted as an excellent substitute for alfalfa to feed dairy cows, and planting now is advised as hay prices may rise to around 20 dollars per ton next spring.
Neighbors and friends gathered at the Mason home on Wednesday to assist with a corn cultivating bee for Howard Mason who was in Emmetaburg Hospital for an appendicitis operation. A Graettinger mass meeting reviewed a 30 percent rate-reduction petition from 210 of 218 signers. Iowa Public Service Co. manager W B Hamilton said no cut now. The electric light committee will study Burt Whittemore and West Bend plants to compare municipal and distributing systems and possible future purchases of power.
Harry Keller presents pupils in a piano recital at the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon June 20 at three o'clock. Performers include Helen Ione Wilma Barber Lammers Raymer Shavey Jensen Prick Clemmensen Garber Henninsen Swift Bartleman Noble Barringer Harding Singer and others. A pre school class demo will feature.
Last week's heat wave benefited the corn crop as it grew rapidly and rains on Wednesday night and the prior Friday night helped corn in the ground. Small grain is ready to bed out due to heat, straw remains short, cooler weather may slow maturity and allow straw to extend. Overall corn shows wonderful headway with many farmers noting substantial progress.
Mrs J B Wilson aged 48 died suddenly at six a m Monday January 12 at her Estherville home after a brief illness cerebral meningitis. Survived by husband and daughter funeral conducted by Rev ft yesterday at Aue ware.
News reports ongoing chicken thefts across the Estherville area. Floyd Brandt was arrested in Jackson with 54 loose chickens in his car and pled guilty to stolen property. he is serving a fifteen day term at Estherville and may be sent to Palo Alto county after. Nearby, chickens were taken from Rudolph DeWall on the Sullivan Estate near Graettinger. A week earlier, harness was stolen from Martin Petersen southwest of Graettinger and Ora Lonsberry four miles south of Graettinger. Thieves are bold and farmers are urged to guard property.
Chris Schwitters a 44 year old umpire, died at his Armstrong home after an acute indigestion attack during a baseball game. He was taken home in Armatrone but did not recover. He leaves a seriously ill wife and two daughters.
George Sweet and his troupe, well known in Gracttinger, perform in Ruthven on June 26 27 and 28 and in Emmetsburg on June 29 30 and July 1 2. They opened the Hawkeye Theatre in Gracttinger in 1912 with The Messenger Boy and have toured the U S and Canada. A display ad will list Ruthven Emmetsburg shows next week with admission reduced to 10 and 26 cents.
General Johnson Hapgood announces the Citizens Military Training Camps will not train basic or first year candidates this year due to economy. Only those with prior training may attend, and camp quotas are reduced accordingly. Also notes a heat record with temperatures reaching 106 in Hatherville and Grettinger.
The Graettinger Commercial club met at City Hall with strong attendance. Discussion covered a sewerage system estimated at 27000 dollars and water mains extension costing about 400 dollars per block. A Curry Engineering Co letter was read to Mayor Fred Spies.
A threatening cloud moved across the region Wednesday evening, bringing a brief high wind and a four to five minute downpour. Damage occurred at the Galbraith farm and Elmer Fredericks place, with a destroyed house and deaths among baby chicks, plus telephone poles toppled near old 17. Emmetsburg saw minor wind, while Vernon reports include moved dams and windmills destroyed. Graettinger spared heavy wind but faced rain.
Mrs P M Petersen 84 died at her daughter Mary’s home near Wallingford on June 1. Funeral services were held at the home and East Immanuel Church. She is survived by daughter Mary and son Nels. An Emmet county resident for sixty years, she was seen as a faithful Christian mother and hospitable pioneer.

Algona sheriff picked up two strangers in the jungles near the city last week after a Pontiac was linked to them. The men, recently released from a Dakota City jail, are held for identification while authorities seek the car owner through its factory motor number.
