Free Library adds books from library fund drive
The Friday afternoon free library in the old brick school has been a success with strong pupil participation. Teachers report practical reading benefits and demand more volumes for summer reading. The P T A plans to buy many high grade books from the library fund and Des Moines traveling library. A $5 association donation aids the effort. Reading hours remain Saturday four to five for anyone seeking material.

Sunday School Convention at South Vernon
The District Sunday school convention of Walnut Lost Island and Vernon townships met at the M E church in South Vernon on Sunday afternoon June 10. The program featured scripture by Mrs G C Coolidge invocation by Rev Cuthbert and an address by Mrs Cuthbert. Mrs Cuthbert read a paper on Sunday School Efficiency and Miss Gladys Johnson played violin. Music by the Grachtinger quartet. Mrs Mueller presented a paper and the event concluded with officers elected for the ensuing year.

On the Way to France says 15 year old Laughlin heads to war
A 15 year old named Le land Laughlin from Gracttinger, son of Martin Laughlin, writes from Tobyhanna Pennsylvania while en route to France with U S Army. He travels on a special train from the Mexican border toward New York with two companies of 225 men each. Leland carries a revolver a blanket roll and a machine gun as part of the field force. He is joined by Ray Rousch son of Rev and Mrs A R Cuthbert of Graet tinger Emmetsburg Democrat.

Benedict Hession Weds Shirley Parker in Waterloo

Mrs Michaels Dies After Brief Illness
Mrs. Wm Michaels died Wednesday evening at seven oclock after a week of illness due to bowel inflammation and heart failure. The funeral is set for Saturday at two oclock with services at the M E church. An obituary will appear next week.
First Webster Lincoln school contest in Graettinger history

Fort Scott Boys Send Thanks From Angel Island
Fort Scott California editor Times sends thanks for the paper. A company of 84 boys left for Angel Island and sail June 5 for the Philippines. They describe camp at Presidio and training for service. They mention gifts from Graettinger girls and the M I church, and note deaths of Bode butter maker from pneumonia.

Dear Folks I have been in the hospital on suspicion of mumps but it was a bad cold and they let me out This is my second time in hospital We sailed the 19th waves washed over the deck fellows seasick I saw flying fish two whales and about 50 sharks We’ll breakfast at 430 tomorrow when we reach Honolulu at 1230 It is very hot about 120 in the shade but a cool heat It may cost little to send fruit I am tired of the voyage only 150 miles more I hope your garden is thriving I wish you would send home made candy Honolulu candy is bad I have enjoyed the trip and started a book about a Soldier's life Goodbye.

Mr and Mrs Lara Christensen of South Pasadena California gave their daughter Mrs Ellen Peterson a 120 acre farm five miles south of Graettinger. Mr Christensen homesteaded 80 acres 47 years ago. Peterson and her brother Louis Christensen are the sole children. Parents moved to California years ago for the mild climate. Mr Christensen prospered in Palo Alto and holds large county interests.
