Mrs Niels Jensen passed away Friday morning at her home in the city after a fall illness marked by strokes and high blood pressure. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the residence and then at St Pauls Lutheran church with the pastor presiding.
Times readers commend the serial Cimarron begun last week with extra copies available at the Times office. Also, Henderson Furniture Co displays porch furniture including a swing priced at 4.05, cheaper than a Fort Dodge competitor. A correction notes Elaine Swift and Wilma Wikers were wrongly omitted from last week's honor roll.
George, proprietor of the Graettinger Nursery, reports a strong spring with sales matching or slightly surpassing prior years. The nursery, known in the state, offers quality trees and shrubs at about 40 percent below competitors and emphasizes well-cut stock and good value.
Weather notes describe widespread rain across the region with heavy showers Wednesday night and over the weekend. General downpours, misty drizzles, and another soak Saturday evening raised moisture levels, yielding exceptionally good crop prospects though pastures suffer from earlier spring dryness.
A Times reporter toured Graet gery Nursery early this week and found a large stock of pear trees. Mr. George has hundreds of pear trees, many years old, and says they are as hardy as apples. He predicts more pear trees will replace apples in the next decade.
Graettinger opened with an 8 1 lead before Emmetsburg rallied in the final innings to win 5 4. Dutch Thompson started for Graettinger with Lester Craven catching. Sam Reynolds, Bud Lancaster, Wesley Leydy, Howard Hoerrwell, Cecil Jones, Earl Erickson, Delmar Allen, and Carl Elsenbast featured in the field.
The first amateur boxing tournament round opened at St Marys gym in Emmetsburg Tuesday evening drawing a large crowd. Results list Reeves out. many bouts featured technical knockouts and close decisions, with multiple weight classes including 126, 122, 125 and 136 pounds. A future program is planned for June 23 as new boxers enter the ring.
Bridget M Nolan and Lawrence G Smith united in marriage at Immaculate Conception church Tuesday morning June 9 at eight. Rev Father Kelly officiated. Best man was Prof Mark Smith and bridesmaid Miss Josh Noten. After ceremony a wedding breakfast followed at the bride’s parents. The couple will honeymoon in Wisconsin and eastern points before settling in Goodell Iowa. The bride taught eight years, five in Goodell, and is daughter of C M Nolan. The groom, son of Mr and Mrs John Smith of Goodell, is a farmer joining the Goodell community.
Graettinger hosted a trap shoot on Sunday drawing top marksmen from the region and resembling a Labor Day celebration. The piece notes strong local participation and ponders organizing a registered Labor Day shoot. It also mentions church hour changes and a dance event near Emmetsburg, with details on times and venues.
Burton Christian, member of the Redfield South Dakota graduation class, drowned the day before commencement while swimming in a creek. Several other boys were with him at the time.
Joe Oakes of northeast of town visited Friday and acts as president of a Ringsted bulk station owning oil. The firm plans a similar station at Emmetsburg with tank deliveries and future expansion. A capable businessman drives the venture and pushes this new enterprise forward.
Gladys Nefstead and Guy FB Brackney of Clemons town united in marriage at First M E Church Des Moines on May 29. Attendants Berlin Miller and Linda Wallar stedt. Bride wore peau de soie and jasmine bouquet. Couple left for a short honeymoon then plan to settle in Des Moines with Graettinger ties.
Mrs J J Duffy of this locality attended a Mount Loretta reception in Dubuque on Thursday June 4. The ceremony began at 6 a.m. and concluded with the archbishop of Dubuque leading six priests. Father Slowey of Lawler, a Mrs Duffy cousin, assisted. Three novices were received, two nuns professed, and two took final vows, one being Sister Mary Daniel formerly Celia O'Brien. A noon reception followed the morning services.
This week’s Democrat reports a half section farm in Ellington Township sold to John Flaherty for 126 per acre. Former owner was Mr. Brownlee. It marks a second Ellington farm to fetch a strong price in six months.
Arthur Lowenburg of Goodell, son in law of Mr and Mrs C M Nolan, mourns his father’s death after a prolonged illness. He had been ill for some time. Mr Lowenburg has the sympathy of many Grachtinger friends in his sorrow.
A Cadillac carrying gypsy women toured towns Tuesday afternoon stopping at businesses to seek a doctor. In Grachtinger they encountered Marshal Blam, but the ladies did not pass on fortunes and left without medicine.
The Palo Alto county Red Cross annual meeting will be held in the Emmetsburg High School junior college study hall Monday afternoon June 16 starting at 1:90. All officers, thirty and members urged to attend. Mrs John McNamara secretary
Palo Alto County 4-H girls outline Rally Day events at Emmetsburg High School on Friday June 26. A 10 00 a m registration and community singing session opens with a music contest in the morning, followed by a covered dish lunch in Super Park and afternoon dramatizations, pageant activities, solos, and more at the high school. Florence Forbes will attend representing the state 4-H department. Parents and others are urged to attend. further details to follow.
Mrs. Mary Cahill of Palo Alto county dies after weeks of illness. Born in Wisconsin in 1863 she married Edward Cahill in 1881. he died in 1898. She leaves son John of Emmetsburg, four brothers and five sisters, with Graettinger mourners noting her Christian fortitude. Funeral held Monday morning.
Vacation Church School children present a demonstration program at the Methodist Church. The event aims to be a notable service attracting a fine crowd, with parents especially invited to attend.
Members of the First Lutheran church of Grasttinger invite all to a July 4th dinner and picnic on church grounds. A splendid meal will be served and an appropriate program carried out. Plan now to attend this Independence Day event.
Next Wednesday evening June 17 is Family Night at Hawkeya Theatre. The entire family will be admitted for 60 cents. The program features the attraction Quick Millions in the evening lineup.
D C Barringer of Graettinger mourns the death of his father Charles Barringer who died at Ruse North Dakota Monday noon. Burial will be in North Dakota. The deceased long resided in Palo Alto county and owned a farm southwest of Graettinger. He moved with his family to North Dakota twenty five years ago and is survived by his wife seven sons and four daughters. Sons include D C Barringer Graettinger Paul Arthur Emmetsburg Ray George Berdell North Dakota Vernie Idaho. Daughters include Mrs William Hermansen southwest of Graettinger Mrs Harvey Brown Ruthven Hazel Minneapolis and Maule North Dakota. The community extends sympathy.
Two upcoming showings with Evelyn Laye John Boles and Leon Errol headline One Heavenly Night at the Hawkeye Theatre on June 13 and 14. A lure into a world of luxury and temptation is promised before Wednesday June 17 when Quick Millions with Spencer Tracy and Sally Eilers plays. Family night on June 17 offers admission for the entire family at 50 cents.
Emmet county Farmer's picnic promotes Ringsted event on Thursday June 18 with all day Ringsted band music and evening Melody Masters dance. Activities include kitten ball horse shoe pitching races and more. Orator 5 S Beech of Hutchinson will speak. Musical Brooks and his Chimes Orchestra perform two free acts. Program begins 10 a.m. A cordial invitation is extended to Grachtinger residents.
The Broviak shoe and harness shop at Terril was gutted by flames in the early hours Sunday. Firefighters saved the building, though contents were damaged. Mr. Broviak rescued his two sons and notified authorities after discovering the fire. Mrs. Broviak and baby were away in Minnesota. The building belonged to Frank Hildreth. the business had operated in Terris for just over two years. Two prisoners escaped Spencer jail by spreading their cell bars. Ben Middlestead and Howe and Haug, each sentenced to 100 days for assaulting officers.
Mr G J Perry and Miss Margaret Thompson, both of Lake Wales Florida, were married in Dakota City last week. The ceremony followed a long journey for the couple as they began their life together in Florida.
