Memorial Day Exercises Honor Soldiers and Sailors
Memorial day ceremonies in Graettinger drew a large crowd under clear skies. The American Legion John Nelson Post hosted a parade from the high school to the Hawkeye Theatre, where Rev Carl Hammer led invocations and Miss Clara J Suss read Flanders Field. Eugene Duffy recited Lincoln's Gettysburg Address as Attorney J W Morse urged world peace and abolition of aggressive warfare. The program closed with hymns, a male quartet, and benediction. The American Legion Auxiliary thanked participants and noted the poppy day success. Lunch and supper offered June 8 by Lost Island Aid circle members.

Stewart Family Mourns Death Of Two Year Old Daughter
Charley and Mrs Charley Stewart of Ruthven mourn the loss of their two year old daughter Mary Louise, who died Sunday from scarlet fever. Funeral was Monday with interment in the Catholic cemetery. Sister Patricia, three, is ill, as is Mr Stewart. Reports say the girl is improving and the family hopes for quick recovery of others. The Graettinger community offers sympathy.

Ralph Ward, 18, of Graettinger now Algona, died from injuries after a Saturday night crash near Clear Lake. His car was side swiped by a truck said to be driven by Otis E. Jorstad of Wallingford. reports differ on hogs in the truck. Funeral held Wednesday at Algona with interment in Evergreen cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Fisher family had lived in Graettinger for years. Gib Paulsen, noted baseball pitcher, was struck by a descending wrench while assisting H. B. Fink of Graettinger Telephone Co. A heavy blow split four front teeth and possibly injured the jaw, delaying his return to pitching. He had not signed with Wilkes-Barre and only played a semi pro game recently for Estherville.

Miss Mary Mahan, 74, died at the home of her brother in law J B Graettinger in Salem Oregon, Thursday May 25 at 4 10 am after a year of ill health. Funeral was held Saturday at Salem Catholic cemetery. She was sister to J J Mahan and Mrs John O Connell of Graettinger and Mrs S J Guerdet of Crookston Minnesota. Change In Hour Of Services At Catholic Church
Effective the first Sunday in June and continuing until the last Sunday in September the hours of mass at the Catholic church will be at seven and nine o'clock on the first Sundays of each month and at nine o'clock on all other Sundays. Mass next Sunday will be at seven and nine o'clock. High School Picnic Friday. The annual high school picnic was held Friday. The boys and girls, accompanied by the teachers, enjoyed a picnic dinner at Fort Defiance Park at Estherville. The day was ideal for the picnic. During the afternoon some of the pupils drove to Arnolds Park and others spent a few hours at Hatherville. Some Extra Invitations. Rt Rev Mgr Thomas J. McCarty, longtime Sioux City church leader and ally to the community, died Saturday after a long illness. Born in Sioux City, he served as chancellor of the diocese, led the Cathedral parish, and remained devoted to his hometown, earning lasting regard from priests and laity alike. His life reflected steadfast faith and service, ending with the calm resignation he preached.
