Alfalfa Best Swine Forage In 12 Year Experiment

Q W Wallace of the Agricultural Experiment Station reports alfalfa as the top forage for suckling sows in a 12 year study, with clover second and bluegrass third. Using 141 litters and 1 025 pigs, corn tanage and alfalfa yielded best results, with limited success from hominy oats and barley as substitutes. Self feeding failed to balance rations, indicating reliance on hand feeding for balance.

Farmer Tests Alfalfa Varieties For Local Conditions

J J Siebel of Minden conducts multi variety alfalfa tests starting with seven varieties on three acres in 1922. Some plots winter killed. Grimm alfalfa strain observed in home seed shows robust growth. Additional trials by West Pottawattamie County are listed with several varieties under study. Dairy roughage experiments compare corn fodder and alfalfa hay economics, showing lower milk production for corn fodder but accounting for dry matter values. Dairy advisor L C Punk explains milk output drops in summer from poor pasture or management and warns recovery in fall is unlikely without a balanced summer ration. Partial soiling, summer silage or leguminous roughage with grain can aid high producers, with about 7 percent more weight of soiling needed to match silage. Feed should be offered only to what cows will eat.
