Rock Island Passenger Train Derailed Near Estherville
A Rock Island passenger train derailed about four miles east of Estherville in the forenoon yesterday. Baggageman Frank Ash suffered severe external injuries to an arm and leg but was not seriously hurt. Traveling man A H Herald was bruised. no one else was seriously injured. The baggage car nearly overturned, and the wreck tore up 1200 feet of track. Cause uncertain, possibly track condition. The train was at regular speed and the tender climbed the rail.

Three Killed in Auto Accident at Walthill Nebraska
A Lake Park family headed to Lyons, Mrs. William Benshoof and daughters Hazel 21 and Ethyl 18, died after their car collided with a late train near a rail crossing. The husband survived with serious injuries as Ethyl succumbed overnight and Hazel died en route to the hospital.

State Fair Passes Not Issued This Year
A. R. Corey, secretary to the fair board, announced that no passes will be issued to the fair this year. Exhibitors and concessionists will receive admissions while state officials, legislators, state employees, and newspapers are cut off the free list, reducing admissions by several thousand. Serious Accident Near Okoboji Claims Life of Horse
A Sunday night crash near Okoboji resulted in the death of a horse, extensive damage to a buggy and car, and a young woman with a broken arm. Ray Sutler of Arnolds Park, driving from Spirit Lake with passengers, attempted to pass a slower vehicle. The other driver, without lights, blocked the pass, causing Sutler to swerve and strike a horse and buggy. The horse died on scene. the buggy and car were severely damaged. The injured woman, who worked at the Antlers hotel in Spirit Lake, suffered a broken left arm. The man in the buggy, a fireman from Des Moines, escaped with minor injuries. The horse belonged to Geo Miller of Spirit Lake, who arrived to end the animal’s suffering. The incident highlights possible fault with the other car’s lack of lights. the fleeing driver did not stop after the collision.

Rock Island Agent Refused Depot Duties On July Fourth Crowd
Spirit Lake depot did not open for about 1500 waiting passengers for excursion trains. Conductors collected cash fares as the crowd filled the coaches. The agent was removed to Thompson Town, nearly a dismissal, for neglect of duty.

A humane shipper at Manson devised a method to transport hogs in extreme heat yet keep them cool. She uses about half a ton of ice per shipment, chunks twice a man's fist, sprinkled with sand before loading, to extend cooling during transit. The ice lasts long enough to keep the hogs settled on the journey despite the heat.
