Pirates Defeat Sioux Valley 4-3 In Conference Clash

Graettinger Pirates rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Sioux Valley 4-3. Steve Dawson earned the win with 11 strikeouts, Terry Masters delivered a three RBI double and two singles, Mike Masters added two doubles, and Tim Rooney drove in the winning run.

Hankey Attends ISU Orientation

Ronald A. Hankey son of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Hankey of Graettinger attended orientation at Iowa State University with many students. He will start classes this fall in the College of Sciences and Humanities after being a Dean's List student at ILCC Estherville. The two day session covered aptitude and placement tests counselor meetings and schedule planning for fall quarter.

Two Named To Deans List At Luther College

Linda Lammers and David Reitz, both of Graettinger, were named to Luther College’s Dean's List for the second semester. Lammers is a junior and Reitz a freshman. A 3.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale is the requirement for full time students.

Deceased Clyde R Varken Remembered in Graettinger

Clyde R Varken of rural Graettinger died Monday after a long illness. Friends said he had been sick for years and a Monday afternoon service was held at Emmetsburg Rendering Works. A Minnesota origin farmer, he weighed 60 pounds at death and a classified thanks note noted condolences paid.

Fire Department Responds To City Dump Blaze

Graettinger fire units were sent to the city dump twice early this week. On Monday at 4 45 p m a fire broke out among dead elm debris with possible aerosol can ignition cited by witness Eugene Baedke who said a ball of smoke rose like a bomb. Fourteen volunteers fought the fire about an hour. A second alarm at 4 a m Tuesday reported another blaze in the dump with two hours of containment by volunteers. By Tuesday afternoon the area still smoldered and a full water tank was used to douse remaining hotspots, assistant chief Roy Skow said.
