Deceased Clyde R Varken Remembered in Graettinger
Clyde R Varken of rural Graettinger died Monday after a long illness. Friends said he had been sick for years and a Monday afternoon service was held at Emmetsburg Rendering Works. A Minnesota origin farmer, he weighed 60 pounds at death and a classified thanks note noted condolences paid.

Fire Department Responds To City Dump Blaze
Graettinger fire units were sent to the city dump twice early this week. On Monday at 4 45 p m a fire broke out among dead elm debris with possible aerosol can ignition cited by witness Eugene Baedke who said a ball of smoke rose like a bomb. Fourteen volunteers fought the fire about an hour. A second alarm at 4 a m Tuesday reported another blaze in the dump with two hours of containment by volunteers. By Tuesday afternoon the area still smoldered and a full water tank was used to douse remaining hotspots, assistant chief Roy Skow said.
