The Graettinger Times seeks a permanent typist starting at $2.00 per hour for about 28 hours weekly. Position excludes Wednesday afternoons and Thursday, requires Tuesday evening work, and starts in August or sooner if qualified. Applicants with high school typing can quickly improve, and temporary work is not considered.
Edna Behnke of Graettinger Iowa writes to Des Moines Register praising the town’s July 4 1976 Tricentennial surprise. She recalls teaching at Graettinger High School in 1928 29 and 1929 30 under Superintendent C Stevenson, later serving as principal, and sharing meals with local residents. She notes family ties, remarks on classmates reunions, and seeks Lois Everett contact information from Graettinger high school home economist days.
Sam Watson among Palo Alto County residents honored with Living Memorials benefiting cancer research. Other named locals include Carl Behrendsen and Esther Shipley. Also notes a Graettinger Community Club July 31 trip to Minneapolis for the Oakland A Twins game with chaperones and free transportation.
Graettinger Pirates rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Sioux Valley 4-3. Steve Dawson earned the win with 11 strikeouts, Terry Masters delivered a three RBI double and two singles, Mike Masters added two doubles, and Tim Rooney drove in the winning run.
Ronald A. Hankey son of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Hankey of Graettinger attended orientation at Iowa State University with many students. He will start classes this fall in the College of Sciences and Humanities after being a Dean's List student at ILCC Estherville. The two day session covered aptitude and placement tests counselor meetings and schedule planning for fall quarter.
Linda Lammers and David Reitz, both of Graettinger, were named to Luther College’s Dean's List for the second semester. Lammers is a junior and Reitz a freshman. A 3.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale is the requirement for full time students.
Clyde R Varken of rural Graettinger died Monday after a long illness. Friends said he had been sick for years and a Monday afternoon service was held at Emmetsburg Rendering Works. A Minnesota origin farmer, he weighed 60 pounds at death and a classified thanks note noted condolences paid.
Graettinger fire units were sent to the city dump twice early this week. On Monday at 4 45 p m a fire broke out among dead elm debris with possible aerosol can ignition cited by witness Eugene Baedke who said a ball of smoke rose like a bomb. Fourteen volunteers fought the fire about an hour. A second alarm at 4 a m Tuesday reported another blaze in the dump with two hours of containment by volunteers. By Tuesday afternoon the area still smoldered and a full water tank was used to douse remaining hotspots, assistant chief Roy Skow said.
