Nephew of Mrs Fogde killed in Kula Gulf

George B. Ill, 22, seaman first class in the U S Navy, died from injuries while on active duty aboard the destroyer Strong in the Kula gulf. The Strong was torpedoed and sunk during bombardment operations near New Georgia island. Ill's death is confirmed by a navy communique and a telegram received by his father George Vedder of Estherville. Surviving are his father, two sisters, and two half siblings.

Prominent Hotel Man Purchases Albany Hotel

The Times prints a quarter page ad announcing the purchase of the Albany hotel by Billie Nolan and another gentleman. The ad says Nolan has vast hotel experience and owns or has interest in at least six large hotels. Supposedly Nolan is son of Mr and Mrs Michael Nolan, formerly of Emmetsburg, now in Canada.

Phoenix visitor Gwendolyn Beaver to return soon

Mrs Gwendolyn Beaver and her Aunt Miss Bertha Axelton arrived from Phoenix two weeks ago to visit with relatives and friends. Gwendolyn’s husband serves in the army in Texas. She teaches at Phoenix and plans to return in a few weeks. Mrs Beaver is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Chris Jensen.

Fred Graettinger Confined To Bed With Back Injury

Fred Graettinger has been confined to his bed for several weeks due to an injury from lifting a leg. His cheek is injured and he will refrain from active work while recovering. Neighbors and friends gathered at the Graettinger farm to plow 50 acres of corn and harvest alfalfa hay. The Graettingers appreciate the kindness and friends regret his illness, hoping for a quick recovery.

William A. Korleski 90 of Emmetsburg died at home after a lingering illness. Funeral 3:30 Friday at St. Thomas Church with Rev. Vollmer. burial in St. Michael's Whittemore. Survived by six daughters including Mary Fries and Agnes Doerning. three sons John, Joe, and William. one son Frank died 21 years ago. Described as a successful farmer with extensive real estate holdings and a long life of hard work.

Howard Horswell, who has trained with the navy at Chicago, is temporarily surveyed out pending final board decision. A small growth near the car required an operation and he underwent surgery Saturday at Mayo Hospital in Rochester. Mrs Horswell and two daughters left for Faribault. children stayed at the Horswell home while she visited Rochester. Friends regret his misfortune and hope for a quick recovery and potential re-enlistment in the navy.
