Lutheran Convention Was Well Attended at Armstrong

A Lutheran church young people convention held July 2 to 4 at Armstrong drew many from Gruettinger and Lost Island churches. The event featured addresses around the theme The Freedom in Christ, a choral service led by Prof. Lyders, and evang ematic meetings led by Rev. A L Lawrence. The big tent was filled to capacity with over a thousand attendees despite threatening weather, and praise was given to committees and the ladies aid for hospitality.

Hawkeye Theatre Installs New Picture Screen

Hawkeye officers arranged with two strangers to build a new picture screen at the Hawkeye theatre. The quoted price was reasonable and the improvement will enhance showings. The opera house company now has a first class outfit. The screen will be used Friday and Saturday of this week.

Smallpox Cases Reported in Towa Week Ending July 8

Health authorities logged 34 smallpox cases in Towa for the week ending July 8, with 14 new diphtheria, 16 scarlet fever, 83 measles, 16 mumps, 19 chicken pox, 28 whooping cough, and 16 tuberculosis cases. The total was the year's second lowest week. Smallpox cases rose to 28 in Boone last week.

Mrs Carlson’s Condition Unchanged After July Fourth Injury

Mrs J A Carlson remains in critical condition at Birney hospital Estherville after severe injuries from the Wallingford Fourth of July incident. She is unconscious most of the time with concussion of the brain and chest injuries as Dr Birney reports. Neighbors and friends hope for her recovery.
