Milford Man in Self Inflicted Wound Near Milford
Verne Landreth about 22 attempted suicide Sunday evening at his brother in law Cal Matheson’s home six miles northwest of Milford. He shot himself with a 22 caliber rifle, the bullet entering the forehead and lodging in the upper right head area. He was found by his sister Lela and taken to Milford hospital in a semi conscious state with left-side paralysis. Doctors say recovery possible if infection does not set in. No clear motive or love affair established. Landreth recently moved from St Elmo Illinois to work on a nearby farm. His employer Bruce Johnson described him as reliable and of good habits. Family and financial pressures may have contributed. he wrote a note to his mother seeking forgiveness. A Lakeside concert by the 168th Infantry Band is noted for Monday evening July 12 at Lakeside Electric Park.

A northbound M. and St. L. train plunged eighteen feet after a weakened trestle gave way Saturday noon. The baggage, mail, and smoker cars crashed through the bridge while five coaches derailed.
