Civil War Veteran Michael Aylward Dies at Hot Springs

The funeral of Michael Aylward was held in Graettinger with Catholic rites by Rev. J. J. Kelly. Interment was in St. Jacob's Cemetery. Aylward, born in Kilkenny Ireland March 24, 1821, died February 8 in Hot Springs South Dakota, after wintering at the National Soldiers' Home. He served in the Civil War, married Anna McGonigal in 1872, and left nine children. The Times extends sympathy to the family.

A pioneer narrative reprint recounts the 1862 Minnesota mass executions at Mankato after the Sioux uprising. It details Gen. Sibley’s trials, President Lincoln’s intervention, the 39 or 37 (depending on account) condemned men, the chained convoy, the gallows built of white oak, and the mild December day as 4000 to 5000 spectators watched the execution of the Native Americans in native dress.

Revival Meetings at M E Church Reach Fifty Converts

The third week of revival at the M E church under Rev J J Share drew over twenty new seekers, bringing total converts to more than fifty. Meeting attendance surged. last Sunday all seats were filled with children on the altar steps. Sixty people began a higher life, and baptism and new members are planned for next Sunday. Rev Share departed for Hardy, Town after four weeks of influential preaching.

Ralph Bingham Delights Graettinger Audience

A strong crowd filled the opera house on Saturday to hear Ralph Bingham speak under the local lecture course. Despite a storm that kept many rural attendees away, the lecture was praised as exceptionally entertaining and well worth the effort. The speaker lived up to his reputation as a humorist, and residents hope for a return engagement next year.

Deaths in Emmetsburg Claim Several This Month

Multiple funerals in Emmetsburg study the passing of Robert McMahon on Saturday after pneumonia. McMahon, longtime contractor and former Rock Island agent, lived there. Also, Mrs. Thomas Miller, longtime resident who later moved to Montana, died after a lingering illness and was buried in Emmetsburg. Mrs Twiggs, niece of local residents M. L. and W. J. Brown, passed away after a short illness, funeral held Monday.

Happily Surprised On 33rd Anniversary In a Friendly Gathering

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Paulsen were surprised by about twenty friends and relatives Monday evening for their thirty third wedding anniversary. Guests from North Dakota included Chris Henningsen and family. A delicious lunch followed a card party and games, and a solid silver souvenir spoon was presented to the couple in a short speech.

Jennie Bigley Joins British Red Cross in France

John P. Bigley reports his sister Miss Jennie Bigley a trained nurse now serving with the British Red Cross in France. She travels with two Chicago nurses who volunteered to care for the wounded and sailed from New York February 2. Dispatches say they landed within twenty miles of the firing line and will serve with the British Expeditionary Force. The work is hard but valuable and the European battlefield offers extraordinary interest.

Emmetsburg secured a win over Mansfield Ohio on Monday by a wide margin, while planning a Saturday showdown against Ft. Dodge on their home floor. Ft. Dodge contends it holds Iowa basketball championship status.
