Blizzard Hits Northwest Iowa With Record Cold

A severe blizzard swept northwest Iowa yesterday and today, with 24 below zero at ten this morning. Snow fell Tuesday and high winds and dropping temperatures Wednesday. Train service was disrupted. sound bound and north bound passengers were abandoned, and only a late northbound train managed to pass. Power and traffic collapsed as drifts closed routes from Spirit Lake to Ellsworth, with no wheels turning east of here. It will be several days before normal business resumes.

Return from Excelsior Springs Trip Affected by Father’s Illness

Michael McCarty traveled from Excelsior Springs Missouri where he spent three to four weeks treating mineral waters for recuperation and was recalled home due to his father’s illness. He notes the climate is milder there than northern Iowa and describes Des Moines as a city of drug stores and hotels with thousands visiting in winter.

Fire guts J H Gammon home in morning blaze

In bitter cold 24 below zero, J H Gammon’s Graettinger residence was gutted by a morning fire that damaged furniture and walls. Firefighters, aided by city water and a suction device, saved the structure. estimated damage around 500 dollars. Gammon stored some items at Johnson Jensen implement warehouse while carpenters repair.

Farmer recalls prices across years in Palo Alto county

Hans Duus of Lost Island township told the Times office he is in good health and enjoys farm work. He recalls corn selling for eight cents per bushel in Palo Alto county long ago and oats selling for five dollars to a livery barn when elevators paid nine cents. He notes land bought for seven ten and hundred dollars per acre and observes current prosperity versus older residents’ views.

Resided Here 44 Years At Lost Island Township

Lars Johnson a prominent Lost Island township resident, visited the Times office Saturday. He has lived there about 43 or 44 years, worked hard, and been financially rewarded for his efforts. He recalls hardships of 40 to 50 years ago and notes he owns considerable property bought for less than today’s rental on an improved farm.
