The Graettinger Bachelors' Club held its Third Annual Banquet after screening the film Colorado at Hawkeye Theatre. Speakers from Emmetsburg Estherville and local members praised bachelor life and American unity, with a formal menu and programs at Woodman hall.
BR. H. Donlon of Emmetsburg expressed his view after dinner yesterday at the Bachelors Club, noting mixed opinions on the club’s acceptance and possible changes. He referenced two ballots and the overall sentiment among residents.

A severe blizzard swept northwest Iowa yesterday and today, with 24 below zero at ten this morning. Snow fell Tuesday and high winds and dropping temperatures Wednesday. Train service was disrupted. sound bound and north bound passengers were abandoned, and only a late northbound train managed to pass. Power and traffic collapsed as drifts closed routes from Spirit Lake to Ellsworth, with no wheels turning east of here. It will be several days before normal business resumes.
Michael McCarty traveled from Excelsior Springs Missouri where he spent three to four weeks treating mineral waters for recuperation and was recalled home due to his father’s illness. He notes the climate is milder there than northern Iowa and describes Des Moines as a city of drug stores and hotels with thousands visiting in winter.
In bitter cold 24 below zero, J H Gammon’s Graettinger residence was gutted by a morning fire that damaged furniture and walls. Firefighters, aided by city water and a suction device, saved the structure. estimated damage around 500 dollars. Gammon stored some items at Johnson Jensen implement warehouse while carpenters repair.
Hans Duus of Lost Island township told the Times office he is in good health and enjoys farm work. He recalls corn selling for eight cents per bushel in Palo Alto county long ago and oats selling for five dollars to a livery barn when elevators paid nine cents. He notes land bought for seven ten and hundred dollars per acre and observes current prosperity versus older residents’ views.
H D Hughes head of farm crops at Iowa State College introduces a new seed sampling device that streamlines germination tests. The invention promises saving time labor and eye strain while giving more representative samples than the traditional hand selection method used by seed companies, which test large numbers annually.

Leslie Wildey, and daughter Alice plan a six week pleasure voyage from Graettinger to South America Jamaica and Guba aboard the Cartago with stops at Chicago New Orleans Colon Port Limon San Jose Kingston Jamaica and Havana. They expect to return by late March after visiting Mammoth Cave and St. Louis. A two million dollar Fort Dodge Portland Cement Corp reports assets of two million dollars with stock and bonds outstanding and notes ongoing mill completion and a $20,000 net yearly rock profit. A. C. Brown of Estherville serves as director amid local financial interest.
Lars Johnson a prominent Lost Island township resident, visited the Times office Saturday. He has lived there about 43 or 44 years, worked hard, and been financially rewarded for his efforts. He recalls hardships of 40 to 50 years ago and notes he owns considerable property bought for less than today’s rental on an improved farm.
Palo Alto Farm Improvement Association reports cooperation with US Department of Agriculture and Iowa State College Extension to run Farm Management Demonstrations. Free simple farm account books, confidential yearly figures, labor income calculations, and community farm averages will be shared with participants. The program begins in March 1918 with records kept through 1918.
