Agricultural Credit Reform Under Senate Review Next Year

Senate Agriculture Committee hearings in Iowa highlighted a farming credit crunch. Proposal would raise loan limits for Farmers Home Administration ownership loans from 100000 to 200000 and farm operating loans to 100000 direct and 200000 guaranteed. Farmers face liquidity strain from low prices and drought, with bank relaxations and growing borrowing to cover production costs. Federal Reserve data show rising repayment delays and expanded loan demand. Iowa Land Bank and Production Credit loans rose 23 and 21 percent respectively in early 1977. Changes may improve how agricultural lending institutions function to better serve farmers.
