Chicken Thieves Target Poultry Dressers Across Counties

ESTHERVILLE MAN IN AUTO SMASH
George Thompson son of Mr and Mrs L G Thompson of Estherville was seriously injured in an auto accident eleven miles from Webster City last Friday night. Ralph Dalby of Des Moines drove the car and failed to see the turn. Both were trapped beneath the vehicle and were taken to Mercy hospital in Webster City. Thompson later returned home and is recovering with a broken pelvis and hip. Dalby has a broken left thigh and developing internal injuries.

Coal output drops amid rail strike and enrollments urged
The daily papers report soft coal mining last week at two thirds of normal, with 74 000 cars loaded in four days equating to 2 220 train loads. If trains passed Graettinger ten minutes apart, the four days’ output would require 16 and a half days of 24 hours. The scene notes that 700 engines and 23 000 cars daily handle output, stressing railroad strain during the shopmen’s strike. Hoping Young Folks Stage Entertainment at Hawkeye
The Hoping youth group presented a valued program at the Hawkeye theater last evening. Attendance was low due to lack of advertising, but attendees praised the show and hope for a Graettinger return. Graettinger schools open Monday with brief forenoon sessions for Labor Day, Supt. White overseeing preparations. The switchboard at the local telephone office was down for hours Wednesday. a lineman from Estherville was brought in to repair it.

J A Jensen and his wife were in an automobile accident Sunday night on Murray hill east of Estherville. A Ford touring car, approaching from the opposite side, swerved into the Jensen roadster, causing about 25 dollars in damage. The touring car driver, said to be drowsy, was held at Estherville jail. no injuries to the Jensens were reported.

Des Moines Wins The State Fair Weather Showdown
A group including Mr. and Mrs. John O Jertson and others returned from the Iowa State Fair reporting Des Moines as the wettest spot in Iowa due to constant rain. Exhibits were good though some program numbers disappointed while the locomotive collision lacked steam. Despite dull moments the visitors praised the fair’s many attractions and believed the trip worthwhile.
