Graettinger prepares for its 26th annual Labor Day celebration with a full day of events. Dickens band provides music, M E Ladies' Aid serves noon dinner, and a boxing card at the American Legion proceeds from 3 pm to midnight.
Ruthven tonight hosts Baldy Wetzel's stock company as they end a three day run in this city. After a strong debut season on the road the troupe packs their tent and orchestra for another engagement. Despite clashing with the Gollmar circus they report good houses and praise their clean, talented show and likely push other tent acts from the region.
A large crowd attended the annual Odd Fellow and Rebekah picnic at Lost Island lake yesterday. Spencer defeated Lost Island 9 to 6 in a ball game, followed by a day of races and a big evening dance.
Mrs Charles Nolan of Emmetsburg, sister of J P Conway of this place, died at her home last evening after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced for Friday.
A Labor Day committee meeting is called for Thursday evening at P. J. McCarty's office. Various committees will report, and all members are urged to attend. Dr P J Hession serves as chairman.
Thomson Bros set a high yield record to date with a 66.0 result credited to Osenar Craven and 76.0 for John Bondhus in rye. GB teereees stv. 70 torree eel reported, with 68 noted in the final line.
Four men from Graettinger were in a Sunday evening crash three miles west of Foresville on the Spirit Lake road. A stone or debris caused another car to swerve and strike the Graettinger vehicle, sending it into the ditch. A second oncoming car then hit the Graettinger car amidships. all three cars were badly damaged but no injuries were reported. The Graettinger car was owned by John Hester. It was a close call for everyone involved.
August Baedke suffered serious injuries Monday when his car left the road at the foot of Duns hill west of Grad stinger. He was taken to Schooley hospital at Terris. The accident, at the corner where the secondary road crosses the market road, involved his brother in law Wm DeWall.
Workmen laid large drain pipes under the Rock Island crossing on Robbins Avenue this past week. The drainage eliminates the persistent lake that formed at the corner near the Westergard blacksmith shop during heavy rain and spring thaws, a greatly appreciated improvement.
Mrs George Frick and Mrs George Wrick of Gracttinger earned honorable mention in the Des Moines Register twin puzzle contest. Seventy three cash prizes were awarded in total with $500 first prize hoped for by Gracttinger ladies.
Rev S O Sande resigns after nearly seventeen years as pastor of the First Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran church in this city to accept a country charge three miles from Fenton. His departure causes regret in the community, where he is praised as tireless and devoted to spiritual welfare. He and his wife and daughter plan to move.
Bill Tisher operates a lunch counter, restaurant, and ice cream stand at Mud Lake and High Lake, near Graettinger Iowa. The area features old timber, picnic grounds, a future scenic drive, a dance pavilion, and a skating rink. Road development is underway linking Wallingford, Ringsted, and Graver to the lakes, making the region a growing resort destination.
Joe Peterson from Ringsted reported Grover Cleveland Coolidge of Graettinger is a distant relative of President Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge, who initials G C Coolidge, says he may come to discuss the Coolidge family with M M Knapp, a distant relative.
In Guthrie Center Iowa a special industrial commission hearing under the workmens compensation act ruled in favor of Mrs. Murphy widow of James Murphy who died by electrocution on Oct. 13 1928 on the Guthrie Center Panora highway against Southern Surety Company as surety for employer James Shipley. The board awarded $4214 with Ralph Young Des Moines deputy industrial commissioner presiding and arbitrators Tarl Vincent and Bert Warrington. Murphy was killed while employed under W J Bennethams payroll though insured by another company. the board found Shipley responsible for compensation. Also offered sale: improved quarter section at 125 per acre, sale led by J A Nelson cashier Wallingford bank.
A N Andersen of Fallow took second with 94.5 in a northern Iowa butter scoring contest at Mason City, behind IE P Conway of Ventura who earned 94.75. Henry Hanson of Graettinger scored 94, with other top entries including W A Thayer Emmetsburg 91 and J Paulson Titonka 90. Fallow and Graettinger creameries gain praise as local butter makers are touted on the Iowa map.
Mrs. Foster mourns the death of her brother Hugh Henry who died at Barton Wisconsin on August 19. He was about seventy years old and survived by his wife and two adopted children. Mrs. Foster and many local friends extend sympathy. A family reunion at Mr. and Mrs. S R Young home included seven children and was a happy occasion.
Graettinger market report lists heavy hens at 140, heavy springs at 200, light springs at 200, and roosters at 260.8. Butter prices noted as 38-3. A clipped line notes general commentary on intellectuals.
The Des Moines Valley Young People's Luther League convenes in Graettinger with programs at the Lutheran church on Friday and Saturday and at Hawkeye theatre Sunday. A reception for delegates and visitors follows the Friday church program at the Martin Myhre home. The community invites all attending to participate as the convention proceeds.
