James P. Kennedy, 68, early Wallingford settler, died at his farm near Wallingford after heart disease. Born November 26, 1862 in New York City, he lived in DeKalb Illinois before moving to the Wallingford area in 1891 with his wife and children. He passed after two heart attacks following threshing duty, leaving daughters Clara and Rose.

Picnic Aug 15 Great Success in Palo Alto County
Graettinger residents joined Emmetsburg visitors for the 75th anniversary of Palo Alto county settlement. John Mahan and wife displayed relics dating back 81 years as hundreds toured them. A large noon meal and big evening crowd followed, the gym dance drawing many attendees. The overall program was a decided success.

Rev Father Kelly officiated with Joe Slaven as best man and Margaret Jackson as brides maid. A wedding breakfast followed at the bride’s home for 40 relatives and friends. The couple left for a wedding trip and will reside in Gradlinger. The bride, a 1929 Emmetsburg High School graduate, has worked at the Emmetsburg telephone office. the groom is a respected former Wallingford resident. The Times offers hearty congratulations.

Butter Makers Compete At Iowa State Fair Showdown
Des Moines August 20 Farmers Creamery Gractinger and Lost Island Creamery buttermakers Palmer Frettem and Selmar Nelson join 90 rivals for the Iowa butter making championship at the Midwest Dairy Exposition opening August 26 at the state fair. Prize money medals and diplomas will be awarded as the event claims the largest butter show in the region. A Chevrolet car belonging to Jerry Leonard was stolen in Graettinger Thursday night and found abandoned two miles north, stripped by thieves. No arrests reported.

Barney Hassel Defeats Webb In Six Round Thriller
Barney Hassel of Graettinger defeated Webb of Spirit Lake in a six round bout to claim the Spirit Lake Dickinson county victory Friday night. Hassel knocked Webb down in the second round but the bell rang early, keeping Webb from a finish. Hassel fought mostly left handed after an injury in the second round as he remained dominant through the remaining rounds. Several other bouts highlighted the card.

Cars Crash On State Road 17 Sunday
A Marshalltown man, Guge, driving toward home, collided with Willis Bisgaari’s automobile on State road in Gruottingar Sunday afternoon. Guge suffered a severe gash in an arm. No other injuries were reported. Both cars were damaged though drivable. Guge had been visiting relatives in Estherville and was rushing to Marshalltown at night.

Business Men To Finance Picture Show In Graettinger
Graettinger business men signed a guarantee to operate talking pictures at Hawkeye Theatre until January first. A J Johnson had run it four months but reported losses. Warm weather and depression reduced attendance, but new backing supports keeping a cinema as a community draw. The Graettinger Opera House Co charter will be renewed soon for twenty more years. Saturdays will feature solid programs.

Sac City Receives Used Fire Truck From Groettinger
Sac City council accepted Mayor Jed Spies of Groettinger’s offer and Sac City firefighters delivered a used Reo chassis fire truck with two chemical tanks and ample hose. The vehicle has about 2,000 miles and is in first class condition, supplementing existing chemical equipment for three large tanks amid limited water access.
