Silo filling on record early due to heat and drought
In the Gruettinger area a month early silo filling begins as Doerke salvages feed from a corn crop that is stunted and largely earless. Fred Nissen and neighbors help unload while Henry Lammers irrigation sprinkles over about 80 acres to offset the lack of rain. Water from a river powers a 1000 gallon minute sprinkler system purchased in 1950 for nearly 6000 dollars. its impact on yields remains to be seen amid the hottest spell since 1996.
